I am coming to NYC next month with family and would like to take them to a new show. I will be going to see Hadestown and Moulin Rouge on 7/3 and was interested in recommendations on a new show that would be good for my parents and 10 year old niece. We are from Louisville and have the tours of Dear Evan Hansen, Come From Away, and Lion king coming this next season. I was thinking The Prom or Be More Chill could be fun, entertaining family musicals. Thoughts?

And should I get these tickets in advance or just do rush the day of?

Not sure what "fun, entertaining family musical" means to you but "Be More Chill" (which I didn't see) is about incels and "The Prom" has a fair amount of strong language. Having noted that, I enjoyed "The Prom" much more than I expected to: fun songs, witty book, story I cared about.

Be More Chill is not family friendly. It's not something I'd want to see with my parents OR my 10 year old niece! LOL.

"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022) "Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009) "Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

Why not Beetlejuice?

A bit raunchy, but all in fun.

Best Musical around right now.

I don't know much about either as I like to stay in the dark on shows and movies until I see them. But the songs I have heard from Be More Chill have been on the funny side (two player game, bathroom, kinda be into) so that initial feel for the show must be off quite a bit. And I know nothing about The Prom but have heard good things. Both are listed as age approved for 10-12+ so thats what I was going off.

I was also thinking Beetlejuice and Frozen.

The Prom!!! I saw 5 shows last week and that was by far my favorite! (I also saw Tootsie, which I loved, Cher, it was fine, Wicked for my 8th time, and Ain’t Too Proud, didn’t care for it)

Prom. No questions.

I don't think Beetlejuice is suitable for a 10-year-old. Tons of F-bombs and lots of sexual innuendo, but honestly it depends on the maturity of the 10 year old. It could be perfectly fine.

I'd vote The Prom, hands down. Don't even consider BMC. The Prom if you want a family friendly, lighthearted musical, and Beetlejuice if you know the 10-year-old is mature enough to handle orgy references and tons of curse words.

I’ll start off saying that I am a huge fan of Be More Chill. I saw the Prom a while ago when it first came out and while I laughed a considerable amount of time I was a little underwhelmed and frankly wasn’t as in love with it as I thought I’d be z

That being said: I think your parents would enjoy the Prom way more than Be More Chill. It has a more “mature” feel to it and a little more of a classic Broadway type of show. While be more chill is great, it’s very Sci-if-esque and is for sure not everyone’s style/taste. It’s has a much younger feel. Your 10 year old niece may enjoy that more but honestly it has inappropriate language and sexual references as well so may not perfect for that age.

Another really great one if you wanted other consideration is Tootsie. I thought that was fantastic and your parents would love it most likely. I didn’t find it as inappropriate in terms of language and themes as the prom and be more chill.

I’ve seen both and I would recommend Be More Chill. It will have more appeal to the 10 year old. Funny I’m going to Louisville this weekend, so we could be of similar mindset! I’ve seen Hadestown which is awesome (and is actually think a young person would like that too!) and I saw Moulin Rouge in Boston and it was awesome! Send me a PM if you like!

If you're looking for family friendly, Be More Chill isn't it. Definitely Prom, it's very light hearted, tells a beautiful and accepting story, and the music is enjoyable.

Also is nobody mentioning the opening line of Be More Chill is literally "Im waiting for my porno to load" and there's nothing child friendly about that? Just my thought.

The Prom is a so much more fun! I took my 15-year-old to see both shows and she was so excited to see be more chill but afterwords said that she enjoyed the prom a lot more

Im not sure either of them is appropriate for a ten year old (depends on what s/he has been exposed to/the social-political views of the family for Prom) but BMC is entirely INappropriate for a 10 year old.

One of the tough things about this decision is that BMC and The Prom are two incredibly divisive musicals: you either get them or you don't.  As for "family-friendly," I'd probably lean towards The Prom, but depending on the social awareness of your 10-year-old, BMC might also be a good option.  There are kids I know who are 9 that are listening to it.

Lots of F-bombs and references to sex in Be More Chill. IMO that show serves a very targeted audience - teens. I (a 34-year-old) didn't HATE it, but certainly wouldn't see it again. (Though that "Michael in the Bathroom" song is quite catchy and won't get out of my head.)
