I have a feeling Be More Chill is going to pay for a lil spot and do "Rich Set a Fire" or "Upgrade" or some of the group numbers. If they've been looking at the grosses, they're not looking too good.

I could see Cher Show getting a slot so that the actual Cher could introduce it and get viewership... not sure who else would pay for a slot.

If a show is making little money, would they invest $200+K to appear on the Tonys, though? If so, should go for broke and let George do Michael already...

Maybe in a way it is a investment in future rights and productions?

I'm having the same thought as DAME, and also they could do it as a last-ditch effort to boost sales. Also the reason I specifically avoided the first number- nobody would buy tickets for their children with that opening (or censored version). Another reason could just be pride- they seem very proud of their work and probably want to show it off.

The King Kong producers seem to have scads of good money they’re willing to throw after bad on this thing, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see something from them, even if not a full number.

I saw them do the opening number on GMA (I think) and found it very weak. I think the best choice for BMC would be the title song. "Rich Set a Fire" is a fun and catchy number, but it lacks context as a standalone piece.

So far every number from Be More Chill that I have seen on tv has made no sense to me. That show makes it seem that every number only woks in context.

I would be willing to put money on Cher Show, Pretty Woman, BMC, and (if they can get the puppet across town) King Kong ponying up the money to perform. Many shows put aside money for Tony performance purposes in their weekly advertising budgets for the months leading up to the Tonys. Even if they haven't already set aside the $200k, it's major exposure for tourists, subsidiary productions, and stock & amateur licensing.

Expect Cher Show (with Cher) to have either a very prominent "11 o'clock number" that they can hype up for the first 2 hours, or the first performance before commercial breaks.

Also expect Disney to have a flashy number with all 3 of its currently-running shows, to celebrate its 25th anniv.

Don't count out any of these "In Residence" performers (ugh). I'm sure the Tonys would love to get Barry Manilow on the telecast.

I have noticed the last two years that the only shows that weren't nominated for Best Musical that performed were at least recognized in major categories. In 2017, Bandstand (which ended up winning Best Choreography) and War Paint (which had two Lead Actress in a Musical nominations for Patti LuPone and Christine Ebersole) performed while AnastasiaA Bronx Tale, and Charlie & the Chocolate Factory did not. Nor did the unnominated revivals of Cats and Sunset Boulevard. Last year, Summer: The Donna Summer Musical (which had two acting nominations for LaChanze and Ariana DeBose) performed while Escape to Margaritaville did not. I would not be surprised if we only see performances from Be Chill More and The Cher Show (maybe King Kong as well) on the telecast this year.

If you're interpreting my comments as suggesting that nothing from BMC works out of context, that's not at all what I was saying. My problem with the opening number was not that it couldn't stand alone; I just don't think it's a very good song. On the other hand, "Rich Set a Fire" is catchy, but would probably seem pointless to most people without some context because it's a musicalized text exchange between teenage girls.

Besides the musicals nominated for Musical/Musical Revival, I expect:

Be More Chill (probably Michael in the Bathroom, as its a showstopper and they will only have to pay one actor. Keeps the cost way down. This is why the closed Ragtime revival just sent in Christiane Noll to rep the show. That "burn down the house" song is the most painful musical experience Ive ever sat through and definitely wont get them ticket sales. A solo number is a much safer bet).

The Cher Show (Cher has already said she wanted to perform. And this team has aggressively gotten SJB performing on every TV show. Maybe a 9 to 5 type moment where Cher joins the company at some point)

Disney 25th Anniversary (which will obvi include moments from Lion King, Aladdin, and Frozen. Only question is if they highlight past projects, or slip in Aida or Beauty and the Beast to announce one of those rumored revivals).

Maybe:

King Kong...those producers love throwing their money away. So sure. But I have no idea what they could perform. But considering that they long thought they would be a major Tony player before the show opened...perhaps the thought of something.

What I'm really crossing my fingers for is a moment for the Plays. I loved the year when the playwrights got to introduce their work and hope they continue with something in this vein. Especially since we would get some fabulously outrageous Taylor Mac outfit in the telecast.

Lot666, I apologise. I wasn't interpreting your comments as such. I was making a personal point that everything that I personally had seen on tv (Good Morning American, Strahan & Sara, etc.) has no made any sense whatsoever, to me. Again, sorry to get your comments into the mix. I believe I was trying to agree with you, in some way that didn't work out as I planned.

The question I have is I am assuming CBS or the producers of the broadcast have the say of what other shows can have airtime other than the nominated shows. Again I am assuming there is not a lot of extra time to present every show that might want to be represented for the season.

So, Frozen has an actual performance scheduled for 6:30 PM on Sunday, June 9th at the St. James. Weird that they're one of the only shows actually performing while the Tonys will be going on that evening, but either way that's how it is.

How will this affect any presence the show has in a Disney medley at the awards? Maybe they'll just pull Cassie and Patti, and then a few of the ensemble members to perform on the telecast while swings fill-in the show that night? Maybe they just won't be on the awards at all?...

Do we know for a fact that there will be a Disney 25th anniversary representation on the show? Or is that an assumption? Since CBS airs the Tonys, they may not want a big advertisement for the parent company of one of their competitors.

We don't know, but it showed up at the Oliver's and it isn't a particularly unreasonable prediction. But perhaps not since Frozen has a show during the awards ceremony.

That's not quite how it works. Shows can't just "pay" for a spot and get on the telecast. They can campaign for one. But ultimately Tony Awards Productions ((Basically the League and CBS) decides who to invite. And then the show just has to pay for the production: salaries not just for the performance but for rehearsals. And not just the cast but the orchestra, wardrobe, hair and make-up, props, delivery, transportation etc. They don't pay a fee to anyone.

After Scott Rudin's whole debacle 2 years ago (he would only allow a real number from Hello Dolly if it could be performed onstage at the Shubert), I DOUBT any show would be granted permission to broadcast from their theatre. It would start a big precedent.
