I cannot imagine Frankie and Johnny will be finishing their 16 week run, which is sad. I wish more people would give it a chance.

Uptick for Be More Chill but it's still in the bottom 5 by gross and gross potential. Summer break can't come soon enough.

Sheesh can nothing post a decent gross? Everything is struggling. BMC improved its audience numbers yet is still struggling to get over 500k. Memorial Day is just around the corner, however.

Both Beetlejuice and Tootsie are also proving to be not very hot tickets. Hadestown truly is the singular smash of the season.

If you ignore Ain't Too Proud I guess that's true :)

Tootsie has made $1 million the past few weeks, how is that not doing well? And Ain’t Too Proud is making tons of money either. It’s in no way the singular smash of the season.

That is a little unfaur because BMC potential gross is low.  It could  be near bottom even if it sold out

Agreed on ATP - see my post :)

Tootsie is a bit tough to get a read on so far - it is definitely doing well, but I don't think there is a lot of depth of demand. Take a look at ticket availability this week and next for ATP vs. Tootsie and it is night and day.

ATP is doing good, you're right I guess that goes hand-in-hand with Hadestown. But Tootsie is a bit more uneven for sure.

Right but that doesn’t matter really if it’s been making over $1 million for a few weeks. We’ll see if it holds but to say it’s not doing well is just false since it’s done quite well so far. Can it hold up I’d say is the better question.

I would argue Constitution, too. It's grossing incredibly well and selling out. I imagine they've recouped their investment and are waiting for to announce it just before Tonys for peak publicity.

Lots of "decent" ATP, ALDN, DEH, HADES, TKAM, Wicked... most of the new stuff is just mediocre. Ain't Too Proud and Hades are the winners this season... and I mean in the money not awards or "audience likes".  ATP is doing great... the average ticket price is high... $117.00 and average gross is 90.7%, while Tootsie is at $99.31, that's a big difference. Tootsie Gross average is only at 68.72% thats not good. Honestly there hasn't been a hit in that theater since "Millie". It's a barn. Hades average tkt is $121.80... great! and average gross is at 92.54%  so we definitely have 2 hits this season until other things open.

Tootsie making it into the Top 10 is very impressive, but it’s main problem (is the source material too dated and problematic today?) Could cause it trouble after labour day. Hadestown has also done really well for an essentially original musical (which probably has a lower weekly but than the other blockbusters) but will it lose steam after its inevitable Tony triumphs?

The other main narrative in recent week has been the struggles of ”2018 musicals” as they get upstaged by the newer crop. However, most of them (with the exception of King Kong enjoyed) improved attendance. Earnings were relatively constant (as inevitable in a quieter week like this one) so next month will probably be the main test for Pretty Woman, Be More Chill, etc...

Agreed.  I thoroughly enjoyed it, but it seems the appeal just isn’t there.  I’m not even sure a slew of great reviews can save it.

I expect reviews to be incredibly positive but yeah... people just don’t care, which is a damn shame.

Also, does anyone know why Burn This only did six performances this week?

I just don’t think Frankie and Johnny could have picked a worse time to open. There’s an insane amount of quality plays this season, some of which are doing/had done really well with grosses. I think if this began in August, as most plays are wrapping up and not heating up, this show could garner more attention. It’s just in the middle of everything right now, so it just gets grouped in with everything rather than standing out at all.

About the musicals, I have no clue what some people are looking at in assessing shows like Tootsie among others. About the plays, while F&J is not doing well (yet), half the plays are doing poorly, and some that are a lot more costly, already reviewed, etc. I'm not ready to write it off (yet) if the reviews are as I expect them to be. People don't pay attention, but right now is one of those times that those of us who do can reap the benefit of the neglect.

"The Cher Show" looks troublesome as well. It got back into the million dollar club again (by a slim margin), but it's been over 3 months since it cracked the million mark.

Even assuming a Tony win by Block, they're going to have to do some heavy advertising to keep up any momentum. And how much longer will she stay with the show, regardless of a win? A year? With a major bump in salary I'd presume.

With running costs over 900K, it has to start performing better, unless producer Sellers' (Hamilton) pockets are deep enough to let it bleed.

Jeffrey Seller can afford to cover any losses with the spare change between his couch cushions!  The Nederlanders will let him keep the theatre as long as he wants it. Regardless, he'll pull the plug if it's not improving by the fall --- at least he's smart enough to know when to cut his losses.

Audra has a TV series, and I'm sure Michael Shannon has a busy film schedule -- I'm sure the producers took the window they had.

Why would Tony wins make a show lose steam?

Rough as this time of year is to open a show, I'm actually kind of shocked how bad the FRANKIE AND JOHNNY numbers are. Maybe if it gets stunning reviews it'll have a chance, but these are some of the lowest percentage of possible gross numbers I've seen in a good while.

And King Kong just cannot be making their nut with these grosses, can they?

That’s not what I was implying. I just wanted to point out that Hadestown will flourish this summer - and probably into 2020, but it could be another victim of “second year syndrome”...
