Marisa Tomei will lead THE ROSE TATTOO on Broadway This Fall |
I saw this at Williamstown a few seasons ago. The production -- assuming it's the same concept -- is just okay. A lot of weird video loops and pink flamingos all over the set for no reason. But Tomei is really sensational. I hope they bring back Chris Abbott -- he and Tomei had fabulous chemistry.
Strange that Roundabout is opting to transfer this, of all things.

Well, considering it's presently without a writing team, I can't imagine it's moving forward with that timeframe.

Huh?? What am I missing -- is there some connection between Tennessee Williams and Magic Mike?? I'm pretty sure quite a few shows are opening in the fall.

Trip Cullman is currently attached to Magic Mike as the director. And yes, there are several strippers with heart in Tennessee Williams plays. You just have to look for them really hard.

saw her in this show at Williamstown Theater Festival. a few summers ago. She was outstanding in her role, and I expect that she will get a Tony nomination for her performance.
Magic Mike begins Nov 30 in Boston, so they may still have time for that.
This show seems kinda bland to me on paper, waiting to hear more on it before I purchase HipTix.

I seem to remember rumblings that Roundabout was going to transfer it 2 years ago right after the Williamstown staging.

Surprised they announced this. Does not sound good for MAGIC MIKE as we know it.
I'm glad they are doing a lesser-known Williams. This play has a rich, warm history and glad to hear some good word about Tomei. Count me in.

It's totally feasible for someone to do ROSE TATTOO (starting previews September 19 and opening October 15) and MAGIC MIKE (starting previews November 30). They could have 6 weeks of rehearsal for Mike without it overlapping with Rose at all. Though for all we know, Mike could be delayed now.
Remember, Scott Ellis did both Kiss Me Kate and Tootsie this past spring, and Cullman had Choir Boy, The Mother, and The Pain of My Belligerence back-to-back-to-back.

I would go in blind -- no preconceived notions or expectations.

The film contains one of the best screen performances ever from Anna Magnani, who won an Oscar for her role.

It's been a while since I've seen the film, but I remember really liking it. It was nominated for (and won) a slew of Oscars in 1955, the same year as Rebel Without a Cause, Picnic, Marty, East of Eden, Guys & Dolls, Oklahoma!, and a slew of others that may have aged better (or are better-remembered)... but I don't think it could ever be categorized as "terrible."

Maybe it's just the trailer making it look overacted. I get that acting styles change over time. But I like movies from the 1950's-1960's. Heck, I like movies from the 1930's-1940's. So that's not it.

You made it to Trip's Instagram page. He loves you! Congratulations!
HA! That's wonderful. What a great sport.
I, for one, am excited. I've somehow managed to have never seen ROSE TATTOO on stage before. And I love Tomei, so it's nice having her back.
