Why isn't John Mulaney hosting... James Corden is not it. Sorry, but he was cancelled long ago. When he couldn't name a single camera man in his studio during spill your guts or fill your guts, I said yoU ArE CANCELLED!!!!!! John Mulaney has heart, he's ACTUALLY FUNNY, and he cares about the people he works with. James Corden has already done this before, move on sir.

Several reasons:

– Corden is one of CBS's biggest stars. The Tonys are CBS's only major awards show.

– Corden is a past Tony winner.

– Corden hosted the highest-rated Tonys in 15 years.

– Corden has not been "cancelled" by 95% of the TV-watching world.

– John Mulaney is still a niche talent. I love him, you love him, and a lot of younger people love him, but I guarantee the key demo for the Tonys doesn't know who he is. The Tonys are Broadway's biggest chance to market itself nationally, and the most important thing is that audiences tune in to WATCH. Just look at Twitter as a comparison: Mulaney has about 1 million followers; Corden has 10.5 million. I can almost guarantee Mulaney wouldn't have even been the 2nd or 3rd backup after Corden. He'd be a good host and I hope he gets to do it someday when he will mean more for ratings.


A better use of your time would be questioning why a woman, or better yet a woman of color, isn't hosting, since the last time a woman hosted solo was Whoopi in 2008 and Rosie O'Donnell in 2000. But all the Corden answers would still apply to that situation.

I believe MUlaney does want to do it, even if joking about writing a musical. He's a frequent broadway attendee, watches the Tonys, and just seems like a great fit. He's also been on broadway before.

I’m not big on Corden either, but he’ll fit the bill just fine.

For what it’s worth, Corden happened to host the highest rated telecast of the last 15 years because that’s the year Hamilton blew up.

How about somebody, ANYBODY, that isn't a WHITE MAN!!!!! Dear Sweet Lord we are TIRED of WHITE MEN HOSTING. Quiet as its kept, We don't want James OR John OR Neil. WE FREAKING DON'T! TITUSS would kill! AUDRA would KILL! BILLY PORTER would live! We need a break from 10 years of White hosts!!!!!!!!!!! Heck, last year ONE wasn't enough and they made us suffer through TWO. We're tired. And THEY are tired.

Good point. Personally, I could care less who hosts the Tony Award ceremony. I want to see the performances and obviously who wins. Sure, it is great when the host can be as good as Neal Patrick Harris was for several years but if not I still will tune in every year.

Most Tony fans could care less about the host, but a host is important for drawing in "casual viewers," especially when 80% of the TV viewers won't have seen any of the nominated shows. The host is also good for commenting on the action and covering in the event of a mishap. Even in the hostless year (2007), Angela Lansbury started and ended the show in lieu of a real host.

I mean I am one who is all about representation and everything but like relax. A lot. No one is tired James is a popular late night host from the network who hosts the tony's, its not much more complicated than that. And yes, we do want John Mulaney.

We have bigger issues if you truly believe he doesn’t know the name of his camera operators. At least the one mainly on him. He clearly played that up for the game - it isn’t fun if everyone tells the truth and doesn’t eat the food.

LOl...hey dude chill out over the host!  Corden is great (not tired and he delivers) and it's all about CBS

Confused a bit by all the vitriol in this thread towards LaneBryant’s point. While I wouldn’t go so far as to say the Tony Awards has any sort of intentional racism problem, I do think it’s quite fair to say it would be nice to have a female and/or person of color host the awards.

As SomethingPeculiar pointed out, it has now been a decade since a woman or POC has hosted the Tony Awards (alone). While I have absolutely no issue with James Corden hosting, (in fact I rather enjoyed his previous hosting turn), and understand he is functionally the most convenient choice, it WOULD be nice to see the Tony Awards make an effort to find a woman or a POC sometime in the near future to host, if they are a sensible choice.

There is nothing wrong with desiring diversification in media, in fact, most circles would say it’s a good thing. I only make this post because this discussion seems to be teetering dangerously on the opposite edge of the line.
