Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 5/12/19 |
Those Constitution numbers, I seriously cannot get over them. Also do we think Be More Chill will even make it to the Tonys? Yikes.
Improvement for Tootsie, which is nice.
Summer can't come quick enough for Be More Chill. It's now in the bottom five, boy is it smarting. My guess is that the producers are keen to wait it out.
Ouch for Frankie and Johnny --- 27.4% gross potential. I'm guessing the producers overpriced the face value of seats at the Broadhurst.
Be More Chill's weekly nut is around $500k/week so having $407k gross this week hurts. Numbers will hopefully increase once summer starts.
Very happy to see PROM increase its grosses! Hopefully this will start another momentum that will last through the summer.
A nice growth fro beetlejuice, but I dont know how long it'll survive with only pulling in 60%.
I kinda feel like it may be time for Beautiful to bow out gracefully.
Be More Chill is done, even if it has a good summer, come september its going to crash again.
Constitution is absolutely the story of the Spring, those grosses are fantastic.

I don't know how plays typically fair during previews. Is this unusually poor? I do know that reviews are much more important to plays than to musicals, so I assume things will pick up substantially once the reviews, which I think will be mostly raves, are published.

Kiss Me Kate's numbers are astonishingly good, for a show that's not in the top-tier of beloved musicals and with a star who previously had trouble selling tickets. Roundabout's best numbers since Cabaret, I think? Even better than Mark Ruffalo and Danny DeVito. Actually, this seems like a pretty good year in general for Roundabout, between True West, All My Sons (which was up $60K), and KMK.
Frankie & Johnny will be a major test: Can Audra tell tickets when she's not singing? Her last nonmusical play was in 2004. That's a weak start.
Be More Chill should have a little money in the coffers from better weeks, and their reserve probably isn't fully depleted yet. But those numbers are baaaad and won't be sustainable for long. I predict that they will pony up the big bucks to perform on the Tonys, they won't see a big return from the TV performance, and they'll post closing within 2 weeks of the Awards. (Same with The Prom.)

I get that The Prom is holding out for the Tonys and (maybe) the Ryan Murphy Netflix production. And maybe Be More Chill is holding on in the hopes that their numbers will boost when kids are on summer vacation. But real question: can anyone guess why King Kong hasn't pulled the plug? They must be atrophying money, no?

I'll bet they think it would be embarrassing to close before their awards are received at the Tonys. "Thanks for the honor, we closed last week" would be too too tacky.
They'll post the closing the end of that week.
I don't see MFL extending beyond July. The numbers are just not good and the Vivian Beaumont Theatre is a large theater.

I'm not saying the show won't close this summer, but tickets are currently on sale through November 10. So, technically, it's already extended.
Im not even sure now that Be More Chill will make it through the summer, they just announced a big summer ticket sale, never a good sign

Considering how often it’s been on TDF and now this, I feel like a dips#!t for going to see this in previews

Even if a show is on sale until a certain date, it can still close before then. At this point for MFL, it depends on their advance, but i think a July closing isn’t unrealistic.
Can I be the first one to propose that we don't use BJ as an abbreviation for Beetlejuice? Might avoid a lot of confusion. ![]()
