Long time lurker here (hence my pretty dated name).
I've been in New York for the week and have only the weekend left. I'm on a tight student budget so I've been relying on lotteries/rush - I've had luck with both Mean Girls and The Cher Show.
I'm trying to figure out what shows I should put my time into rushing since I feel pretty out of the loop. I'm from Toronto so I see most of what tours there. I have a mixed bag of shows I think I'd like (Tootsie, Burn This and The Prom). I've only really started considering The Prom today from reading such great things. I'm open to other suggestions as well.
I guess I'm looking for advice on what I should see (yes, another one of these posts).
Go with either Tootsie or Burn This, in my opinion! The Prom was awful. Acting and singing for all the characters (with the exception of Beth Leavel's role) was sometimes average, more often below average. The music is generic and forgettable, and it's a comedy that's rarely funny.
If you're under 25 and into musical theater, odds are that you'll love the Prom. Love it.
That's far from the only group of folks that will enjoy it (I'm a fair bit older and had a great time), but I'd guess that easily 90% of that demographic will have a good laugh, a good cry and come away humming the tunes.

GO TO THE PROM!!! I was in NYC last week, and saw a number of shows, Tootsie being among them. For me, Tootsie was...”MEH!” I laughed 2-3 times. I just didn’t connect to the material. The Prom was GLORIOUS. I laughed all night long. The cast is incredibly strong. Brooks and Beth are worth the price of a ticket. Choreography was exciting. I’ve been listening to the cast recording every day since I saw the show—it’s awesome. I am jealous that you can go see it! I only come to NYC once every year or two (live in Canada, and I don’t fly, so, it means a 7 hour car ride, plus 6 hour train ride), but, have been thinking of coming down later this summer to see it again. If you go see it, please post to let me know what you thought!
I agree with The Prom. An original musical, unlike all this Hollywood to Broadway transfer stuff that has been just over the top. I like to support originality when I can. I'll save my viewing of Tootsie for the movie.

I’m assuming you’ve also skipped The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Once, Sunset Boulevard, The Producers, Waitress, Billy Elliott, Newsies, Kinky Boots, Matilda, The Color Purple, An American in Paris, The School of Rock, Aladdin, Spongebob, and The Band’s Visit.
Shows of varying quality in there for sure, but some true gems too. Seems sad to eliminate a whole category of musicals because of their source material I, too, am tired of cash grab screen-to-stage adaptations (you’ll notice I didn’t mention Anastasia, Frozen, Mean Girls, or Pretty Woman), but if a show works on stage I don’t care about its origins.
My reply might be too late but I enjoyed Burn This. It's also the most limited of the 3 shows you mentioned as it's only a 16 week run. So if you're planning a return trip, Tootsie should still be around. I would hope The Prom is around at least through the Summer.

Wow, did we see the same show? I saw The Prom this afternoon and the audience loved it. The biggest collective laugh reactions I’ve ever heard, jokes were hilarious, and I didn’t think there was a weak link in the bunch!
Take a few minutes to watch some videos of the prom before you see it. I found the music pretty bad and left it off my list, however charming the plot looks.

Scroll up. OP already decided to see The Prom and loved it.
