Caught the movie last night. While it has some flaws, I was captivated. A couple of times I had to remind myself I was watching Renee Zellweger and not Judy.

Renee deserves all the Oscar Buzz!

Renee is sensational. She has the performance to backup all the buzz she's getting. The film itself is not without flaws, especially in the editing department, but Zellweger carries the film on her back. Guaranteed Oscar nomination, and the frontrunner for the win at this very early leg of the race.

I thought Renee was pretty average, maybe even downright bad at times. I liked her a lot in some scenes, but I found the concert scenes dreadful. She is not Judy at all there. The singing is nothing like her, she doesn’t do any of Garland’s moves. She just stands there eyes wide open. When she started moving during Come Rain or Come Shine I actually laughed out loud. And don’t get me started on that Disney Channel Movie ending. Sometimes Renee sounded British. The movie is also very basic, with truly terrible flashbacks.

Davis remains untouched.

I agree the MGM flashback sequences were not great, but very much disagree with everything else you said.

She is fabulous in this.   So glad she did not do a impersonation.

I would love Pal Joey's review of this movie.....I enjoyed it...I teared up  twice..at the end  of the movie and another time when Judy went to those  guy's house for eggs. The last part of the scene was heartbreaking  for me...A sure Oscar Nomination for Renee.

Judy was amazing- loved every second of it. So glad I read some negative reviews because it shows me NOT to listen to other people. This movie was an Aplus for me- and if Rene does not get an Oscar for this, I will be shocked. Female Performance of the Year -  at least so far. the movie is creative, interesting, suspenseful and fabulous.

Do we have to see her die on-screen at any point?  I'm assuming the story goes that far, or is it more ambiguous like "End Of The Rainbow" was on stage?

No. We learn of her death during the end credits. This film is a celebration of Judy, nothing is glorified or salacious. This isn’t a tragic Judy Garland bio. Her crash and burn moments are handled matter-of-factly and peppered with Judy’s legendary humor.

Thank you. I was concerned this was going to be a "let's put Judy on screen to watch her suffer for 2 hours" situation.  I was apprehensive about seeing the film, but your description makes me want to give it a chance now. Teaser trailer for Judy w/Renee Zellweger

That’s why the film is getting the raves it is. Go to YouTube and watch a few of the JUDY press interviews. The love for Judy Garland expressed by Renée and the rest of the cast and crew (director, etc) is a testament their intentions were never to show a battered down Judy. Unlike the fabulous MY LIFE WITH JUDY, this film JUDY showcases Judy’s legendary sense-of-humor. Audiences laugh with her in this film, which is beautiful. Yes, we see the messy moments, but they are not hammered at us. Even then, Judy’s humor shines thru. The flashbacks of the young Judy gives context to her messy moments as the older Judy. Remember, this film takes place 6 months before she passed away, so it does not end with her death.

Overall, I like Renée but thought the screenplay was lackluster. There’s very little new ground to tread. It’s like beating a dead horse. I understand why Liza and Lorna distance themselves from it. The question I have was Judy really always such a mess? She’s portrayed as pathetic in so much. It’s really exhausting.

I did appreciate the handler character who communicated compassion and empathy rather than eye rolling or irritation. It seems people were drawn into her fragility to either care for her or exploit her.

SPOILER!!!!! Was the piece about the gay couple true? I found that bit incredibly pandering if it’s constructed. If it’s not true I find it incredibly manipulative and odd personally. Was it thrown in to pander to gay men? It seemed out of place. The fans she latched onto due to loneliness didn’t need to be two old queens.

I like Renée and was glad she didn’t try to mimic but I think her makeup and prosthetics did the heavy lifting. She doesn’t sound like Judy and at times she didn’t remind me of Judy. Actually some of her mannerisms and delivery reminded me more of Charles Busch.

However I did like the film and I think Renée deserves acclaim but I’m not as over the moon as others.
