I was thinking the exact same thing. I’d be shocked if she wasn’t nominated. Her performance was incredible. I’m so excited!!

A couple things about North Country:

First, I loved the show, but not everyone does. I think it will very divisive among both audiences and awards voters. When it was rumored to transfer in this season (before Hadestown announced), everyone figured it would sweep, but only because there are virtually no other contenders for best musical. Now, I haven't seen Moulin Rouge, but it strikes me as much more of an obvious contender for Best Musical, despite not being quite as artistically ambitious as Moulin Rouge. (I won't comment on Jagged Little Pill, because I know next to nothing about it as of now, whereas I've seen the film of Moulin Rouge, and I'm aware of how its being staged). 

Also, if it were me in charge of Tony eligibility/petitioning, I would put North Country into the play category. I know, I know - an unpopular opinion. But the music is not meant to function like it does in a musical, and if people go in expecting a musical-theatre structure, they are more likely to be disappointed. In fact that was the case with several people on this board, and several of my friends who saw it.

Girl From the North Country isn't really a musical. It's definitely more of a play that uses music to set tone and mood and some insight into the characters. I know I basically just gave the definition of a musical, but the songs don't really function they way they do in a musical. I hope it transfers, but I think some recasting might be needed. A lot of people I know that saw it in London felt that the American cast didn't quite work.

Any word on Sondheim's new musical? Anyone heard any rumors?

No cast announced for ART nor at the Citedel. Only Chicago. I am assuming they are going to play with what they have in Chicago, see who fits and who doesn't between each of their three productions leading to the road to Broadway. The creative team for Chicago I know is the same as the ones from West End. The set is the same, the main queens costumes are the same (not sure of the understudies as they usually have their own unique designs to fit them) but then the co-directors and choreographer from West End are working with Chicago as well.

Not for the new musical, but Encores is doing Roadshow this summer so if that does well maybe it'll transfer?

These depend on some transfers, but most of these transfers seem relatively likely at this point. From what I know about all of these, a really nice diverse group of nominees. Next season for musicals is shaping up to be a good one.

It’ll be a brutal Secret Life of Bees vs. Moulin Rouge showdown, but how do you award best musical to a show using nothing but modern pop songs vs. a show that has one of the most breathtaking original scores in recent years?

Based on the more independent (Band’s Visit or Hadestown) and less branded/commercial (Mean Girls or Tootsie) tendencies of Tony voters in years past, I think that these are reasonable (though also slightly ridiculous because these are over a year away).

Best Score: The Secret Life of Bees

Best Book: Girl From The North Country

Best Actress: Adrienne Warren

Best Supporting Actor: Danny Burstein

Best Supporting Actress: Patti LuPone

I would normally agree with this.  But Band's Visit and Hadestown were not jukebox musicals like Girl from the North Country.  They had a different air of originality about them and were able to sweep up a bunch of the "other" awards, providing them the momentum to win. 

I believe this year will go down as the height of the jukebox musical and that we'll see a backlash in the coming years.  That said, all rules are off when comparing four jukebox shows:  Girl from the North Country, Jagged Little Pill, Moulin Rouge and Tina.  My prediction is that the show that racks up the most "other" Tony awards will take home the top prize as "best".  At the moment, Moulin Rouge came out with a strong showing to be the show to beat, as it looks like a front runner for choreography, set design, lighting, direction, and others.  I'm excited to see how the other new musicals compare.

With the announcement about Six coming to Broadway, how do you think Tony voters will deal with potentially nominating the queens?  I know the Oliviers nominated them all together, but the Tonys had just changed the rules on that for Matilda.

I imagine like Matilda, they will be given an Honorary trophy. Unless they go the Jenn Colella/Come From Away route and single out only one queen.

If Lightning Thief gets announced like we’re 99.9% certain it will within the next couple days, what do you all think it will get?

I’m gonna say Best Score for sure since there’s so few originals (and it’s a pretty good score), but I really can’t think of anything else given the weak direction and low-budget design. Acting I can’t say I have a lot of faith in either. So if it does show up, I see it going the Be More Chill route, maybe with some more success thanks to the source material.

I realize this is the point of this thread (given the title), but I think it's really "way too early" to say which shows it will come down to. It depends so strongly on how each of these shows builds momentum in the awards season. Even if Secret Life of Bees came in this season, I really don't know how awards voters will respond to it. Girl From the North Country and Secret Life of Bees were my two favorite "musicals" this season (I still believe North Country is a play with music), but they have both been somewhat divisive, and I truly don't know which of them would be more likely to win, or if they would even be treated as serious contenders. Maybe the awards voters will LOVE Moulin Rouge for the spectacle, and hate North Country (as many people have), and so maybe it will come down to Moulin Rouge and Six. Or maybe Six will be ignored by voters for its lighthearted simplicity, and it comes down to Moulin Rouge and something else. I'm not saying any of this will definitely happen, I'm just saying that with so many divisive shows, it all depends on the voters, and the shows' momentum.

No way... Moulin Rouge sweeping the tech awards including set, costumes, lighting, sound, and choreography is almost a lock. I think Danny Burstein will also finally get his Tony. But it will NOT win Best Musical.

To even see people comparing The Inheritance to The Lehman Trilogy is so strange. The Inheritance is one I put off seeing until I almost ran out of time, because I figured it could NOT live up to the hype, I had just seen the revival AinA, and I figured there's no way this also warrants 2 4-hour segments. The Inheritance is a masterpiece. (Sure the second section isn't as strong as the first but altogether, it's a brilliant g-d masterpiece. And I think they will address the issues for Bway.) I've never been more excited for Broadway audiences to see a play. Just thinking about Part 1 makes me cry, it's so good.

Lehman, in contrast, was a dud. There's great acting, great, but the play as is feels very much like a first draft. After we leave the 3 original brothers, the rest of the 2 acts are nonsense about the generations of family members that follow - without being about what they actually did, how the company evolved during modern times, and what led to collapse AT ALL. It's almost like an overly long way to get actors to play with various characters in like a weird improv class imitation rather than be about Lehman Bros. The end scenes we were actually laughing that they made the cut. I can't believe this play is the final version. 

 

The Six score may not be what voters are used to rewarding, but it is SO great. I hope they get a lot of recognition over Moulin Rouge! if nothing else with an original score comes in. It's such a tight, strong show.
