So for the 5 nominated Best New Musicals, plus the two for Best Musical Revival, who performs what?

The Prom
Hadestown
Beetlejuice
Tootsie
Ain't Too Proud
Oklahoma
Kiss Me, Kate

Also, do we think the producers of The Cher Show and/or Be More Chill will put out the money to have them perform? Even if it's just a 2 minute number?

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

Yes. I believe both productions will pay for the slot. The program will be pleased as well because I’m sure they’ll get an agreement that Cher will announce an award (best lead actress) and Be More Chill performance can boost ratings.

Guesses:

The Prom: Just Breathe/ It’s Not About Me Medley

Hadestown: Way Down to Hadestown

Tootsie: I Won’t Let You Down

Kiss Me Kate: Too Darn Hot (I thought they would want to feature Kelli but I think they are going to pull a Carousel we’re going to win choreography number)

Not sure for the other ones

Has there ever been a show that has been willing to pay but the award show says no?

For so strange reason I feel like Disney’s deep pockets may pay for a spot to showcase a 25th anniversary celebratation/ reunion of their shows.

Definitely the Cher show will perform. Likely even with Cher.

And probably be more chill

I also sense a Times Square streetwalk musival. (Maybe that might be the Disney tribute)

I feel that moulin rouge will make some sort of appearance as well

Another question: Don’t all shows have to pay even if they are nominated for the Best categories? I very much remember a fundraising campaign so Deaf West Spring Awakening could perform and they were nominated for Best Revival.

My hopes:

The Prom - A little bit of Just Breathe (or maybe Dance With You) into It's Not About Me. I just hope they showcase the Broadway characters instead of just the kids, as imho they're the best selling point.

Oklahoma - Surrey or People Will Say We're in Love. The quieter moments of that show are the best part, imho. The title song was the one part of the production where I felt a little let down by the scale (though props for doing that vocal arrangement with such a small group) - it worked in context, but I think it wouldn't be a great advertisement for what this production really is.

Tootsie - I Like What She's Doing, I guess? No clue. Sarah Stiles' song is the best, but I'm sure they'll want to show off Santino.

Ain't Too Proud I'm sure will do a medley.

Hadestown... probably Way Down Hadestown since it features all of them and is a super catchy song

I think Beetlejuice should do the opening - ballad into A Show About Death

Kiss Me Kate just did Too Darn Hot on the Today Show, which may or may not matter, but it's definitely the highlight. Though I could see them focusing on Kelli O'Hara and doing So In Love. Solos at the Tonys are always an interesting choice, but it worked great for Fun Home and Book of Mormon, so it could be really effective here. Then again, choreo is probably their best shot at a win, so maybe Too Darn Hot is the way to go.

Wouldn't be surprised if Cher Show AND Be More Chill put out the money for a performance - they could use the publicity.

The Lion King just performed at the Olivier Awards to celebrate 20 years in London so I agree Disney might do something to celebrate 25 years on Broadway.

When The Cher Show took over Fallon a couple weeks ago, I thought it was interesting that Cher had her own costume for the duet. So that may have been created for the Tonys as well.

I'd love to see Pretty Woman perform their opening number too but I think BMC and Cher are more likely.

Beetlejuice should do the opening number or the dinner party number.

Ain't Too Proud can easily do a medley, probably with all of the guys at once and not just 5 of them.

Disney has money to burn, so yes I fully expect some sort of "25 Years of Disney on Broadway" medley. (I'm sure the 3 current shows will be featured for ticket sales...but it would be cool if they also included their past shows, with original stars. I'm sure Boggess would jump to perform Ariel on the Tonys again, Beauty and the Beast would be fun to see once more and maybe tease the revival, and if they can get Heather Headley to come back and do some Aida I will be in love).

The Cher Show has also run an extremely robust advertising machine, performing everywhere. So I fully expect them to pay for slot. It's the biggest advertising opportunity of the year for Broadway, and they could have Cher herself introduce a number, or begin it before the cast takes over (a la Block's past show 9 to 5 with Dolly).

Be More Chill I'm unsure of. Will they have the money to do it? Gerald Goehring is the lead producer I believe. His other Broadway outing was A Christmas Story. The show was closed, but they still performed (it was also a Best Musical nominee). The debate will likely be: will our target demo actually tune into the telecast?

Re: Pretty Woman, if it was me I would do the opening number. It has a fun Jerry Mitchell vibe, and also plays into the movie nostalgia. (Unfortunately there's also a ton of cast members, and we're not sure if they want to pay to perform int he first place).

I think "You and I" is the best part of the show and I love the staging. However, it's a slow song.

I Can't Go Back is only about three minutes and can be done with minimal staging and one actress.

But all of this assumes the producers shell out the money to perform, so who knows.

I definitely think they'll do "Why We Build the Wall". It's a big number that just keeps getting bigger, and also it's got the political and cultural timeliness/relevance factor to the average watcher who might not have seen the show yet and I think that number will draw the most people in.

The Prom - "Tonight Belongs to You" or "It's Time to Dance" seem the more likely but I would love to see them go a bit more thoughful and highlight Kinnunen with "Dance With You." Since it was NOT nominated for Choreography, they really don't NEED to show off with a big show stopping number.

Hadestown - "Way Down Hadestown" is the most likely but I really just get this feeling like they should and will perform "Living it Up on Top." It's the most bright and uplifting number in the show and I feel like has the most commercial appear to anyone seeing them or learning about them for the first time.

Beetlejuice - I mean they SHOULD do the "Day-O" but I can't seem an original musical using one of the songs from the movie they only have in there because they could get killed if they didn't have such a famous scene. And so they will likely do "That Beautiful Sound."

Tootsie - The one here I know the LEAST about so I will just say "I Won't Let You Down" or "Unstoppable"?

Ain't Too Proud -  Medley. These kinds of musicals ALWAYS do a medley.

Oklahoma - Hard to say. The logical choice is "The Farmer and the Cowman" from a commercial standpoint but they are a limited run and likely gonna win so they don't really need to be selling itself for the long term advanced sales so they could do pretty much anything they want. "People Will Say We're In Love" is closest to the revamped feel of the show but with Ali being in a race with Amber Grey for that win, letting her shine with "I Can't Say No" isn't outta the question.

Kiss Me, Kate - "Too Darn Hot" and I'll be shocked if it's anything other than this one.

Not nominated but could still perform:

Be More Chill - If they pay for it, "Micheal in the Bathroom" is their bread and butter for sure.

The Cher Show - I don't know how big non-nominated musicals are permitted to take it with their performances because if it HAD been nominated for Best Musical, I was expecting The Finale to go all out but if they need to now be a little more reserved, they might just feature the 3 Chers with the end of Act 1 "Believe" into "Song for the Lonely" OR just feature Block with "The Way of Love."

Pretty Woman - I could see them paying for the publicity with a solo number like "I Can't Go Back."

King Kong - Depends on how they can bend the rules for the Kong puppet or not. If they can get a performance taped or broadcast from the theatre itself, "Full Moon Lullaby" but if they can't work that out but still want to perform from Radio City itself, "Queen of New York" is really their only other option. Also, btw, shout out for a song I totally forgot about from the original Melbourne production I was just reminded of while looking at their wiki. Moment of silence for "What's It Gonna Take?"

Wild cards we might see something from:

Moulin Rouge - I STILL think we might see a preview duet of "Come What May" performed with some kind of little blurb about how Moulin Rouge the movie relaunched the modern movie musical and now it it comes to the stage.

Disney on Broadway - 25th Anniversary is a biggie. Can totally see a medley performance with a performer from each of their musicals singing a bit of a song. And so many to pick from that could be featured! It's just a matter of who can they get to come to town for it.

Personally I'm hoping they don't go in this direction, if only because I think it's the least musically-interesting song in an otherwise wildly interesting score. I think it only gets the attention it does because of the coincidental Trump parallel. But imho that's not a reason to perform something at the Tonys. There are better (less bleak) choices that I think would draw in a bigger audience.

As proven with the Tonight Show performances, they can easily insert Cher into any number of the show. She just shows up and sings the song in addition to the other 3 girls.

Exactly why I think they won't do it at I once thought they would. Also, I don't think that Page is as sure a win as he once was so I can't see them going out of their way to feature his main song when it's so bleek. I don't want to see the show end up like The Band's Visit. A fantastic piece that never is able to find a commercial appeal to a wider audience and closed within a year of the awards. They would be wise to sell themselves with something more fun.

Patrick Page has also been vocal about how the song was NOT written about Trump because people are constantly bringing up the parallel of the southern border wall  (Anais' tune predates his campaign). So I don't know if the production will go in that direction. Remember, the point of a Tonys performance is to sell tickets. They want it entertaining, not coming off as a purely political musical (because its really not). I can see them doing "Way Down in Hadestown" with a couple snippets of other songs thrown in (Carney's refrain, "Lady of the Underworld"2019 Tony Awards Performances.

who is responsible for "directing" the Tony performance? Is it generally the director of the show?

I keep thinking about how electric the Comet performance was 2 years ago, and if that was put together by Rachel Chavkin, then I expect great things from Hadestown this year.

Comet's performance began with Josh Groban singing Dust and Ashes, and then the rest of the cast rose up from beneath the stage on the elevator and threw a giant party.

Based on this, I could see us getting a combination beginning with "All I've Ever Known" going into "Living it Up on Top"

I would love to see Wait for Me as it's the most breathtaking number in the show, but it doesn't feature the rest of the principals as much.

I would imagine Oklahoma would do a medley of "Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'" and "I Cain't Say No." Show off the reimagined sound of the revival with one of its most recognizable songs and then go into a major crowd-pleaser from the cast member most likely to win a Tony.

Re: Hadestown - I have similar feelings about Chavkin and what she did with Comet. She knows exactly what she’s doing and i think that means Way Down.

If they do use Why We Build The Wall, I hope they get one of those characteristic tight shots of Amber Gray because her performance in that song is absolutely breathtaking.

It is always interesting to me the day after the Tony Awards to read what people think was the best performance and how much it may have helped sell tickets. Sometimes it is not the show you expect and one of the examples to me was a couple of years ago when I thought "Bandstand" was one of the best performances.

I'm almost certain that Hadestown will do a medley of Livin' It Up On Top leading into Way Down Hadestown (with the first being interrupted by those train whistles of the second as a segway). Features Amber and André heavily, as well as including Patrick's big entrance, and those are their three best shots at acting wins (sorry Eva) so it would be a smart move. I'd be willing to bet money on it. Why We Build The Wall would not work as well without the context of the whole show, and Wait For Me (as many have suggested), while arguably the best number, is definitely something they would not give away on a television broadcast.

Other than that, if The Prom does It's Time To Dance one more time, I might hop a train down to hell myself.

You're probably right.  But I think they'll finish up the medley with a chorus or two of  "Oklahoma".
