In an interview with Broadway.com John Cameron Mitchell mentions they offered the role to Patti, but decided to close before she responded. I honestly can't even imagine it, but can't say I'm not intrigued.
"During Hedwig's 18-month-long Broadway run, six stars took the wig out of the box as the titular character. Mitchell revealed that there could have been a seventh diva added into the mix. "We asked Patti [LuPone] to play Hedwig on Broadway," he said. "She actually thought about it, and before she could decide, we had to pull the plug [on the show]."
Didn’t say send out offers multiple people. Like I’m not doubting LuPone was offered the role, but they could have easily had someone else on the top of their list. Like wasn’t Miley Cyrus offered the role or something like that?

There are rumors, but not sure why one would put more faith in those over JCM saying it was offered to Patti?!
Yeah, offers and feelers went out to a LOT of people including Miley, P!nk, and Adam Lambert. Im not doubting an interest phone call went out to Patti (and likely other big Broadway names) but a "she didn't scream no immediately" isn't an "almost played the role."
I would've killed to see this. Even if it was a disaster, it would've been a fascinating disaster. And I'm sure Patti's versions of Wicked Little Town and Origin Of Love would've been beautiful. (Hmm, maybe someone can convince her to add one of them to her shows...)
