After Tuesdays Outer Critic Circle Noms Im hoping for a little less Tootsie and a little more The Prom. Just don't get all those nominations for a mediocre show but just my opinion. And pretty sure Hadestown should fare well.

Well clearly that wasn't the voter's opinions. Considering the mostly very positive reviews I would hardly call Tootsie a mediocre show. In fact I haven't laughed that much at a Broadway musical in a long time. I'm getting tired of these movie to musical properties I think they made a lot of great creative choices for the stage version. I thought the cast was great as well.

That said I loved The Prom a lot and hope it gets a lot of nominations.

Like you said, it’s all just opinions! For example, in MY opinion, the Prom is insultingly mediocre, which makes your post really hilarious from my vantage point.

^THIS. Prom to me is such white bread. Sure, we love an underdog story, but it is in no way ground-breaking.

Yes thats what awards are....opinions of people voting.

Perhaps we should be awarding insultingly mediocre productions. Then i would certainly lavish Tootsie and Pretty Woman and Kong.

Does anyone know where us out of towners can watch/stream the Drama Desk nominations? Thanks!

Remember, in every category, 2-3 out of 5 nominees will be for Off-Broadway shows. So these nominations aren't the best predictor of Tony frontrunners, though I think we can expect Hadestown and Tootsie to each get 8-12 noms here and at the Tonys, because they have a lot of "nominatable" elements.

Also: will they reevaluate Hadestown like the OCCs did, because it's so much different than the Off-Bway production? I would guess yes.

In what way did they "insult" you? If you don't enjoy it you don't enjoy it. Dont need to keep repeating how "insulted" you were by the mediocre show, it adds nothing to the discussion.

I would believe so. This isn't a transfer of the NYTW production, which had (sometimes substantially) different design elements, not to mention a different cast aside from Grey and Page.

J Broadway brought up insultingly mediocre productions.  Perhaps you could quote and redirect that question to them.

The nominations are being announced on NY1 during the noon hour. Not sure if you can stream them online or not.

Ordinarily, I would be happy to go into depth about why I think The Prom is an insulting piece of theatre, and how it’s mediocrity is intertwined with, and compounded by, the insulting quality. But I think that would derail the thread too much. I apologize for getting us started on that track in the first place.

My point was, it’s funny to me that people would complain about nominating shows that some feel are mediocre, only to then praise another show that some view as mediocre.

All That Jazz - I’m really not trying to give you crap. It’s less that I think you did something funny, and more that I think the whole situation of trying to pick out the “best” of this year’s musicals is funny, because it naturally leads to statements like yours read by people like me. You have a total right to your opinion and I respect it!

I  have to agree re: thinking The Prom is very mediocre, and I'm sort of surprised there's such a devoted group emerging on the board to champion it during awards season- the vibe I got here back when it opened in the fall was that of "it means well, but shrug."

I agree everyone has a right to their own opinion, I just think throwing around the term "Insulting" to a show that is in no way insulting anyone, just comes off as you trying to degrade the show as much as you possibly can. You're allowed to hate The Prom, like I said to All That jazz, I just don't see it helping the conversation as much when all you say is you were "insulted" by the piece, as if it wasn't good enough for your level.

You’re right - I shouldn’t have thrown around the word casually. I shouldn’t have brought it up unless I was willing to take the time to write a long post backing up ny viewpoint, which I’m not at the moment. But rest assured that it’s not because the show “isn’t up to my level” as you suggested.

But I suggest we move along, and discuss/celebrate the upcoming Drama Desk nominations!

Sorry again for derailing.

Fair enough! And on that note... I do hope The Prom gets some love lol. Just a really heartwarming, fun, and upbeat show that made me happy in a time where I could really use it. Its no revolutionary piece of theatre, but earning some nominations would make me really happy that the show gets recognized.

Also, really hoping the love from OCC for Choir Boy and Jeremy Pope continues.

I feel the same way about The Prom. If I wanted to put on a critic’s hat I could pick out some flaws, but I left that theatre in the absolute best mood. I laughed (a lot!), got choked up more than I expected, I thought several of the performances were really memorable... that’s really all I ask from a show. I don’t need something to be groundbreaking or highbrow to consider it good theatre. It made me happy and let me escape the world for a couple of hours. (I feel the same about Tootsie.)

So, so happy to see the love for Rags Parkland Sings the Songs of the Future - it was among the best things I saw in 2018, if not the best.

I think he's very loved, just not eligible for a Drama Desk this year like the rest of Hadestown.

No nomination for Cranston is surprising. Meanwhile, Kelli O'Hara is snubbed by the Drama Desks AGAIN! Last time she wasn't nominated, she ended up winning the Tony for King and I...

HAMPTON FLUKER?! Ok, next time someone says that the OCC nominations are the weird ones compared to the DD nominations, I might have a seizure.

The full list I believe. They did NOT like Hadestown, apparently. The Prom got five nominations, I believe. Tootsie with 11. Oklahoma! coming in at top with 12.

This list really surprises me. Patrick Page has been systematically disregarded this season it seems. We'll have to see how the Tony nominations fall. And only one nomination for Gary, that wasn't even set design or costuming, I'm shocked. This seems to be a really unpredictable year for nominations.
