Today marks the 25th birthday of Beauty and the Beast on Broadway as well as Disney on Broadway. I have seen the High School Musical national tour, the Fathom Events presentation of Newsies and last month, Aladdin on tour.

Well if Disney keeps doing average shows. I say they will not have long left

"Well if Disney keeps doing average shows. I say they will not have long left"

Disney has employed thousands and thousands of actors, writers, musicians, tech, stage crew, box office staff and theatre personal worldwide for 25 years.  In addition to the tens of millions of people going to the theatre worldwide.

They are not going anywhere anytime soon.  Not sure why anyone would want that to discontinue?

I feel like the problem with the Disney on Broadway approach can be summed up by saying this: When your films are popular and successful because they celebrate taking risks and being yourself, don't go with an overly safe and timid approach when adapting them...

Say what you will about Disney on Broadway, but there's no denying that they've had a lot of success.

They could always revive Aida and/or Beauty & The Beast. Plus their options seem endless: Pocahontas, Mulan, Moana, The Jungle Book...

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

Universal has Harry Potter which won the Tony for its innovative  play and Disney just scraped through it makes me sad.

I was surprised there wasn’t a Beauty and the Beast revival after the success of the live action remake. If it didn’t happen then or for the 25th anniversary, I doubt it’ll happen any time soon. (Although I’d much rather have that than Frozen/Aladdin)

Except Universal has nothing to do with Cursed Child. They merely own the theme park rights to "Harry Potter." Warner Brothers owns the film rights. And neither studio is involved with Cursed Child. The play is produced by Sonia Friedman Productions, Colin Callender and Harry Potter Theatrical Productions (which consists of J.K. Rowling herself and Neil Blair.)

Just watched a Nightline feature on Disney on Broadway 25th anniversary and Tom Schumacher said he was working on a Beauty and the Beast revival but wasn’t ready to announce more info yet. I’m sure the video will be up on the ABC site in the next day or so.

They already announced Hercules, and this is their first revival.  It reminds me of what Team StarKid is doing for their tenth anniversary - one new show (Black Friday, Hercules) and one tribute to the show that started it all (Homecoming, BATB).

As successful as the musicals have been, they have also dipped their toes prouducing plays with Peter and the Starcatcher, Arcadia and Shakespeare in Love.

I imagine they'll do something with one of the Fox films now that they have that under their umbrella. I wonder if Fox Stage Productions will be folded into Disney Theatrical or kept as a separate entity

Although Disney Theatrical has lot of properties they can use, it appears that The Princess Bride musical adaptation is still in the works.

Although Universal has no involvement in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, according to IBDB, Universal does have a impressive set of producing credits, which includes shows/musicals based on properties they weren’t originally involved in (Mean Girls, Hello Dolly, etc.).  Although I wonder if Universal is as creatively involved as Disney is (I believe Universal only got involved in Wicked because they already had the film rights to the book and decided to invest in the musical adaptation).
