Will be visiting NYC this summer- I have room for one show- do you think I should go with Moulin Rouge or Hadestown? Both sound great.

Can't go wrong with either. I can see both being on Broadway for more than a year.

WOW, finally someone has a this-or-that decision that's actually a difficult one! Having seen both shows (MR in Boston, HT on Bway), I'll throw in my 2cents:

Like Wick3 said, you won't go wrong with either show - both have high production value. I'd say go with Hadestown. Both will be around for a while too. Please don't take anything below as negativity b/c it's not - they're pro/con points.

MR was super fun and the set gets you from just walking in, but if you break it down to its essentials, it's the movie on stage. Again, not a complaint, just pros/cons...What you are paying to see is great actors with updated songs on a cool set. I already have tickets to see it twice in the Summer :)

HT for me feels like the more unique show. How many New Orleans jazz sung-through shows have you been to already? Cast is A+ (Carney is the weak link for me), set, choreography, the band...make you want to get up and dance. I have tickets to see it 3 more times this Summer.

If you get here before or close after the Tonys, HT will be THE show to see as that's what everyone will be talking about. Prices are already going up - get tickets soon. Rush/SRO is already crazy with people getting in line before 4am.

Have fun!

Unless MR is your favorite movie ever...I concur with the above, see Hadestown. It has more soul and wonderment (and Timothy Hughes). MR has more spectacle.

I like MR a great deal. I LOVED Hadestown.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

Thank you all so much- gotta see them both- I heard such great things about MR- but now HT sounds even more intriguing- and I love a show that makes me think and is brainy along with entertaining- thank you again for the feedback.

No contest is right.  Hadestown all the way.  Moulin Rouge is a cheap tourist trap.  Great sets and costumes and singing and dancing, but terrible terrible show.  Just all pop songs from the past 20 years crammed into a show.  They took all the heart out of the show.  Hated it so much.  Hadestown is stunning and unique

Cancel your sight seeing during the day and see both. These could very well be the shows winning the Tony for best musical: 2019, 2020.

In the pre-broadway try out in Boston, tickets were selling for Hamilton-like prices. It is poised to be a huge smash hit.
