HILLARY AND CLINTON Reviews |
I'm hoping it gets raves, but I feel like it's gonna be a mixed bag. I happened to adore this play. I hope Metcalf wins Tony #3.
In the New Yorker online today, an excellent piece about Lucas Hnath, starting off with a focus on Hillary and Clinton. I'm reminded of how satisfyingly intelligent, even-handed, and surprising the play is. https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2019/04/22/lucas-hnath-lets-actors-fight-it-out-onstage?utm_source=facebook&utm_social-type=owned&utm_brand=tny&mbid=social_facebook&utm_medium=social&fbclid=IwAR3Tgmbmnd_dWRlP8-Y7QRp_czKRGcMBQEbHGTucDn9siu0irLlJngTGJSE&fbclid=IwAR3H2xCKWCOIuGidVUxEG7rjg43XmSoerDAJhfe8ak1f4f32_PaSM6dsV3s

Is she? These are hardly the raves she got for Doll's House Part 2.

Elaine May is still in it, but considering how long ago her show will have closed by Tony voting causes me to give Metcalf the edge.
Vulture is mixed-to-negative (likely more the latter) on the play itself, but positive on Metcalf.

Don't sleep on Heidi Schreck. Her reviews were glowing.
The new ad campaign that is flashing all over this site tonight is way better than their original one.

After reading the reviews, I think the only reason I would want to go is to see Laurie Metcalf. Just curious, has Bill and Hillary Clinton attended this show and if not does anybody think they will.

I read their publicist has said they have no plans to see it.

From the NYT profile of Metcalf this week:
-----
Scott Rudin, the producer, who also knows the Clintons, sent the script in advance and invited them to a dress rehearsal with no other audience members present. (Nick Merrill, Mrs. Clinton’s spokesman, said the Clintons have “no plans to see the play at present."
“It would be impossible for an audience to watch them watch the play,” Ms. Metcalf said. “It would be tough for any of us to sit through somebody re-enacting our most private experiences on a stage, but ultimately I feel like I empathize, doing it.”
Mr. Rudin agreed: “I don’t think they’ll ever see it. If I were them, I wouldn’t see it. It’s an idea of them. It’s not literally them.”
------
It would be super awkward to have them in the audience--too many people would be watching them for their reactions rather than the play. If they didn't take up the offer of a private showing, I don't see it happening.

Thanks for the information. It would be kind of weird for them to attend show but I was just curious since they love to go to Broadway shows.
While ultimately sympathetic to her, I dont think this a particularly kind portrait of their relationship. Its an analysis of the forces that have held her down, and one of those forces is Bill. They'd be nuts to sit through it (though I'd bet money they've been given a script to read).
