Yup. Ryan Murphy is filming the recent Broadway production/revival of THE BOYS IN THE BAND for Netflix and will feature the entire original Broadway cast of the revival and directed by Joe Mantello.

Well I can not be more excited for this. I saw the recent Broadway revival and loved it. Ryan Murphy is certainly putting his money to good use.

Between this and The Prom, I'm really gonna need Ryan Murphy to define "Netflix movie event" for me.

this is very exciting news indeed...having seen this production last Summer i was blown away by the cast that Ryan will use for the film...my avatar is a picture of Charlie Carver and me outside the stage door the night i saw Boys...it was a night i will always remember.

Exactly what I'm thinking. Is it going to be a full on movie? Is it just a filming of the Broadway production on stage like the National Theater does? We have no idea.

Murphy mentions “set” so it’s apparent it’ll be a film adaptation and not a film of the stage presentation.

Wasn't this already announced last year? Or was that a rumor?

Ooooh this is exciting. The revival was terrific, great ensemble work, and it will be interesting to see how the actors adapt their performances for the screen (or don't).

I assume the same (he also said "film adaptation" in the Instagram post), but he used the phrase "movie event" here, just like with The Prom. So does that mean The Prom will be an adaptation and not filmed on the stage? Or does he just like the way "movie event" sounds?

Yay! There's a lot of lamenting that most productions don't live on past the Lincoln Center archives and whatever promotional stuff is filmed so I hope this gets whatever numbers/response it needs to in order to be financially viable going forward. I don't think every show needs to be filmed but some need to be preserved for future generations on more than a cast album and a shady bootleg.

The fact that this is specified to have the original cast makes me think The Prom will not... or not all the original cast. But this is exciting!!

It’s filming this summer on a soundstage in LA, and then they will come to NYC for a week to do some outdoor shots. It’s definitely NOT just the Broadway production filmed.

I could not be happier about this! I tried to make it back to NYC to see it before it closed, but it didn’t work out.

I wish he would leave it alone but a least it will attract a new generation of viewers.

Saw the show last May during previews.  Incredible cast, very talented.  Just didn't care for the piece itself.  Very happy that it's being filmed with the original cast.

I think the original movie holds up well and it does not need a redo.

It's exactly the same as...same show, different cast. Some will go, others will not, our choice.

Does it need to be redone? No. With that being said, there are so many young people who have no regard for movies made before they were born. If it is older, or even looks older, they poo poo it. This will introduce new audiences to the piece who have not yet seen it.

I’m glad it’s being redone. Like many people said, it’s a chance to bring a new generation of filmgoers into a world that existed well before the modern era of acceptance and rights we have today. A time when gay men wallowed in self-hatred and secrecy because of the world around them. A time in history that, though unpleasant, shouldn’t be forgotten.

Plus, the original film isn’t exactly the most accessible. There is either a sped up version on Youtube (that ruins a lot of the comic and dramatic timing) or the DVD either overpriced on Amazon or secondhand on eBay

I agree. I'll admit I was born after the original movie was done and never watched it until after watching this play on Broadway last year.

Is the original movie available on netflix? I watched it on youtube but will admit the quality wasn't that great.

Will the new one be set in the late 1960s?
