Are you a fan of Stephanie J. Block or Cher? See THE CHER SHOW. I loved every minute.
"Oh look at the time, three more intelligent plays just closed and THE ADDAMS FAMILY made another million dollars" -Jackie Hoffman, Broadway.com Audience Awards
While I'm very familiar with Cher's songbook, particularly her post-Sonny years, and am not very interested in her career and haven't followed her, I had a blast at TCS. It moved right along and didn't drag, though I didn't much care the Greg Allman segment in Act 2 -- definitely a weak part of the book -- and there seemed to be a rush to tie things up in the second half of Act 2. Nonetheless it's a feast for the eyes with the costumes -- the "Ain't Nobody's Business..." fashion show was stunning. The countless quick changes are impressive with the intricate costumes. Great sound and lighting. Loved the three Cher's, though agree as I've read a few times the Teal Wicks persona could have been divided into the other two, though she has the best book scenes and lines. And, if watching gorgeous chorus boys and girls is your thing, this has a very good-looking and very talented ensemble.
TCS's recording is available for streaming and I must be driving my neighbors batty replaying the Vegas scene where they mash When the Money's Gone with All or Nothing, and slot machine sound effects mixed in. Yeah, yeah, it's all fun cheesy fluff, but damn I had a gay ol' time and I hope to catch it again if it's still on the boards when I visit in the fall.
Maybe it's a generational thing: When walking around TS I saw alot of groups of teens and millennials wearing The Prom shirts and buttons.
I’m not a die hard Cher fan either but I loved The Cher Show. It was a lot of fun. Great cast, music, costumes. I think this one will have multiple Tony nominations.
I haven’t seen The Prom but have heard a couple of the songs on the radio and I haven’t been that excited by them.
I thought the three Chers (and most of the supporting cast) were all fantastic, as were the costumes, but I don't have much more positive to say about that show.
Prom was absolutely delightful. Hilarious, memorable, and the cast is spot-on.
Unless you're a huge Cher fan, this is a no-brainer to me.
I'd see The Cher Show. While the book is pretty thin, I think it's directed and staged far better than The Prom, which I felt to be an assault on my eyes.
