something called "Awkwafina" will be playing Alyssa

So, a female rapper and actress well known to most is not a person but  a thing to you? When you simply could have looked it up? Cool. Judgement and ignorance looks great on you.

Amazing casting, James Corden is the perfect choice for this (it's called acting, kinda like Darren Criss killing it in Assassination of Gianni Versace), and everyone else is great. Can't wait to see who he casts as Emma!

Based on the Deadline announcement linked above, it appears thatAriana Grande and something called "Awkwafina" will be playing Alyssa and Emma. Blech. I'm glad I saw the Broadway production.
"

"Something",  jeez, how despicable. She's also likely to be nominated for an Oscar next winter for her work in The Farewell. Might want to get to know that "something".

Also love that we apparently live in an age where Meryl Streep is uninspired casting. Overall, Im very intrigued by this!! Wish the OBC was doing it but if it wasn't going to be them might as well be this.

I genuinely don’t understand how Murphy expects the general public to react to this. The writing and lyrics are just so horrible. Folks got into Greatest Showman bc Pasek & Paul wrote a catchy score with decent lyrics and melodies. The Prom is just a techno mess, with the best parts being anytime they’re not singing to music.

I think the whole team will be in for a rude awakening when the public dismisses this not because of its theme, but because it’s simply not good material.

I would agree with you VotePeron. I’m all about the message, but the material is bland bland bland. I couldn’t remember a single song. But maybe this cast will make it work? That’s a pretty damn strong cast.

I love The Prom score but I recognize its flaws. For me, the shows performance sold me, and its natural heart. This cast could probably deliver strong performances all around and bring the heart that this show needs. I think this film works on stage more anyways but we'll have to wait and see.

I'm shocked people thought the original cast had any chance of being in this.

Also - Meryl sounded great in INTO THE WOODS. If she can do "Last Midnight" in the studio, she can handle THE PROM.

I didn’t love the Prom. Mediocre score, crappy sets and costumes, cheesy choreography IMO. I did enjoy the book and the cast.

That said, again IMO, that is incredible casting, with the exception of Rannells, who seems a bit too young for me; but he is talented, so I will assume Murphy knows what he is doing. NPH would have been my choice.

I didn’t read anything about the actual lead role...wonder if they will go with an unknown or someone like Millie Bobby Brown, if she can sing.

I am actually really looking forward to this now.

Am I the only one over here that finds the majority of things Ryan Murphy touches...atrocious?

He seems the worst candidate for this. He has no idea how to direct tone.

Many including myself who is involved the IP were under the impression it was going to be a filmed performance alla Passing Strange, or a minimally staged film like the NBC and Fox live musicals. This is in part due to its announcement being billed as part of Murphy’s deal with the studio, and it coming after the announcement of a filmed version The Boys In the Band. It did not seem like it was going to be a major priority for Murphy nor Netflix. Its announcement felt like the film was a Ryan Murphy has money to spend and a quota to meet for his new Netflix deal. As such it seemed like a no brainer that it would be shot with the original stars as they are relatively cheap, and would streamline the production. In other words, we thought it was going to be shot like a Lifetime movie and have a similar budget. No one thought this would be an awards play for Netflix, and now that it is, all I can say is wow.

The other surprise is that next year (2020) we are officially getting 3 big budget movie musical adaptations with In the Heights, West Side Story, and now the Prom. Next year is either going to be labeled the year the Movie Musical was reborn, or the year it died.

No I’m sorry, Streep did not sound great in “Into the Woods” and it will forever remain a mystery to me why this brilliant actress who can, at best, carry a tune is regarded as a good singer.

Also, the Corden casting just BUGS THE SH*T out of me. Barry needs to be played by a gay man. If people want to get offended that Emma Stone played someone from Hawaii then I’m allowed to be equally outraged by this. It’s just ridiculous.

Considering Murphy is actively developing three series for Netflix and a film adaption of Boys in the Band I cannot imagine this will get the improvements it needs. My friend mentioned Jane Krakowski should have been cast over Kidman and now I'm mulling over what could have been. James Corden will always elicit the biggest eye roll anytime I see him involved in a theatre project, add to the insult he's playing a stereotypical gay man.

Meryl Streep sounded amazing in Into the Woods. I don’t care if you hate the movie but you gotta give her props for doing an incredible rendition of “Last Midnight” at the very least.

If you think she sounded bad in Into the Woods you’re just...actively wrong

If straight actors can't play gay roles, wouldn't that mean that gay actors shouldn't play straight roles.  That would be a net loss for the gay community.

Re: "Awkwafina"

Monikers like this are just too affected for me to take seriously. When you have to try that hard to prove you're an "artist", I can't help but doubt your credibility. If that makes me judgmental, ignorant, and despicable, I'll own it.

For me, I'm not offended by a straight actor playing a gay role, just specifically Corden because of his consistent pandering to the gay community and the mental image of him playing up every gay stereotype imaginable to play this role.

As for Awkwafina, I've heard amazing things about her performance in A24's The Farewell, so I'm sure she'll wind up the least of my worries in this.

Are y'all really fighting over a stage name? She's a rapper. We have Ice Cube, Snoop Dog, Kid Cudi, Puff Daddy..it's no different. Shouldn't we be talking more about her talent as an actress? She was amazing in Cray Rich Asians, so I'm sure she'll be great in this.

At least you're self-aware.

Her performance in A24's The Farewell is getting universal praise and she's already got early Oscar nomination buzz. Of anyone in this casting she's the one I'm least worried about.

People really thought the cast that couldn't keep the show open on stage would transfer over to film????

I’ll weigh in that I really don’t see the problem with a straight man playing a gay character. It’s called acting. A straight person can convincingly appear gay, and a gay person can convincingly appear straight.

It does make you ignorant, judgmental, and despicable. But like others have said, at the very least you own it. If names are the only thing you judge, Lot666 certainly isn't worthy of attention then.

She's a fantastic actress. I cannot wait for The Farewell, seems like her range is really going to be shown here. Also wouldn't hate seeing her on Broadway someday!

This cast will certainly guarantee more people will discover the property.  People like Jane Krakowski would have been wonderful, but she is not an A list celebrity that Nicole Kidman is, and I'm sure Kidman will also be excellent.

I also think an actor's personal sexuality should have nothing to do with a role they are cast in.
