Adaptations You Would Like To See? |
I remember after seeing If Beale Street Could Talk I thought it'd make a great play.
Id love to see a horror/thriller on broadway though. Imagine the intimacy of it? You can have the killer walk through the crowd, do cool stuff like lighting and sound and projections, I just feel theres untapped potential for there to be a fantastic horror play. Cant think of one at the top of my head right now though.
Im sure Im one of the few but if staged well and a few more songs added, La La Land would be a fun time! And if Mulaney wants to adapt Diner Lobser or Bodega Bathroom he has my money.

Man, I would kill to see a Mulaney musical, I loved "Oh Hello" and the clips I've seen Co-op look amazing. I know Broadway has like a billion meta musicals, but I would not mind at all to see a Broadway musical by Mulaney that is 99% theater jokes.

While he didn't announce any official plans or anything Mulaney said he'd love to write a musical. I really would love to see it or another play from him.
I would love to see a musical adaptation of Arsenic and Old Lace with Bernadette Peters and Bette Midler as the two aunts and Nathan Lane as Teddy.
I literally came here just to say "Nightmare Before Christmas" once I saw the title.
Others I'd love to see are Moana, Pocahontas, Crazy Rich Asians, and Girl Interrupted.
Every time one of these threads comes around someone suggests Arsenic & Old Lace and every time it becomes slightly more criminal that nobody's adapted it.
There's a group of "food movies" I've always thought would make terrific musicals - Babette's Feast, Eat Drink Man Woman, Like Water For Chocolate, Chocolat, Delicatessen, La Grande Bouffe, and The Last Supper.
Woody Allen's Alice also screams to be a musical.
Moonstruck, but only if John Patrick Shanley adapts his own work and I get to write the lyrics
I called an adaptation of Almost Famous over a year before it was announced to be in the works.
In the reverse vein, I think A Funny Thing...Forum desperately needs a film remake (with most of the score intact), and with the right director, it could be brilliant.

I think this is only a matter of time. Same with Love, Simon

I'd like to see the BBC TV series Miranda made into a musical. I love Miranda Hart's humor, and I think Tim Minchin might make a nice collaborator with her for a score.
If I might change any aspect from TV to stage, I might change the main character from female to male, keeping everything else exactly the same, especially the mother who's main goal is to get her [son] married, and the lead character's affection for a very attractive, straight male who is very tolerant and respectful of [him].

I think both would be interesting. Call Me could be very moving and Love, Simon could be great fun with the right creative team.

Honestly I just need a new Minchin musical. Any project he's apart of I'm immediately sold on.
I almost shudder to suggest this, since it's beautiful but stomach-churning material: there's a series of short online comics called CLARISSA, about a girl using her childhood imagination to cope with sexual abuse at the hands of her father, until her imagination begins to crack at the seams and her coping mechanisms turn into nightmares of their own. Think half "Calvin and Hobbes," half "Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me." It would make an amazing musical- opportunities for songs, dream sequences, puppetry- but I feel bad for the cast who have to put themselves into such immensely troubling headspace every night.
Perhaps much more difficult to adapt, but I’d love to see what an oddball like Minchin would do with Confederacy of Dunces.
Darquegk, those comics are disturbingly well-crafted, I imagine a stage version would be like Lolita My Love meets Mr. Marmalade. Clarissa is a more dynamic character too, so I see the potential. They should do what they did for Mr Marmalade and get an adult actress for Clarissa but it’d still be disturbing as heck
Charley Kringas, I think Delicatessen would be a great musical. The movie seems on the verge of turning into one several times.
Whizzer, Michin is a good choice for Confederacy (one of my fave books)
I would love to see a play based on “Diary of a Mad Playwright” by James Kirkwood. The nightmare of putting that show on is a hundred times more interesting than the script of “Legends.” I would also love a show based on Heavenly Creatures/The Parker-Hulme murder, like Thrill Me with more elaborate settings for the girls’ fantasy world.
There was some talk a while back about Dr Seuss’s 5000 Fingers of Dr T, but nothing has come of it in a major way.
Other Films I would like to see onstage: Paperhouse; The Dark Backward; Nothing Lasts Forever
I know Robot Chicken parodied this idea, but someone with talent and a love for the source material might be able to do something with "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan." (And yes, my own eyes roll at the concept - hope this doesn't get me banned from the boards). Still, it features a once flamboyant hero plagued by aging and self-doubt, a swaggering, scenery chewing villain, themes of revenge, facing consequences of decisions made long ago, reuniting with a long lost love, loss, sacrifice, and friendship, all classic dramatic tropes. Technical wizards could create effects to make the audience feel like they're in outer space during the battle scenes (yes, $$$$) using the late James Horner's score.
However, I can see the same thing being so dreadfully and embarrassingly bad (particularly "KHAAANNN!!! or during the final scene between Kirk and a dying Spock - I don't know that I could stomach a singing Spock) that it would irreparably damage the franchise and performing it would become a felony.
