The news about the new Britney Spears musical Once Upon A One More Time got me thinking about its similarities to & Juliet, another Jukebox musical which will open in the West End around the same time. It is pretty early, but this is what we know about them so far...
1. Both will provide modern feminist updates of classic stories (Fairy Tales for OUAOMT, Romeo and Juliet for &Juliet)
2. Both will feature the female leads of these tales rebelling against their conventions and seeking their own happy ending.
3. Both will feature soundtracks comprised of pop from the past two decades or so.
4. There will be some overlap in songs. & Juliet will be soundtracked by songs written and produced by the prolific hit maker Max Martin, including Britneys big hits Baby One More Time, Stronger, Overprotected and Oops! I Did It Again!. Of these four songs, the first and the last are certain to be in OUAOMT and I expect the middle two to be included and well...
There will doubtlessly be a lot of differences, but it is interesting to see two very similar jukebox musicals on different sides of the Atlantic at the same time...
