A Star Is Born - Sara Bareilles?#1

Now I know Bareilles is nowhere near the calibre of fame that Gaga is on but I can't wonder about how A Star is Born if Sara had been cast as Ally as opposed to Gaga (my mind going to her only as she is also a pop star).

in my personal opinion I feel as though Gaga brings a certain grit to the story whereas Bareilles to me would have brought a blues.

Thoughts?

It's pointless to talk hypotheticals. But what worked about Gaga is that we saw her grow from nobody into basically a doppelgänger of herself. Ally is at the same level as Gaga. Sara B has never been as big as Gaga, and it could have looked phony if she was playing someone with greater notoriety. For the music narrative to really work in that story, you needed Gaga, Beyonce, TSwift, Adele, etc.

All excellent points.  Every incarnation of A STAR IS BORN starred a major performer who had achieved the same level of career success as their character: Janet Gaynor, Judy Garland, Barbra Streisand and Lady Gaga.  Sara has not achieved any level of career success as the aforementioned ladies.

Funny - I actually also thought about Bareilles as a good alternative for the role too.

My thing is, I just found the character so thoroughly unlikable from beginning to end. Bareilles might have brought more of a likability to her IMO.

Really? Unlikeable? I'm nobody's idea of a Lady Gaga fan--particularly not since I watched her MSG concert with the closed captioning on so I could read her lyrics--but whatever does the character do that makes her unlikeable? In all versions, the "Esther/Vicky" character is basically a supportive wife, no matter how big her career.

What's to dislike about a loving partner?

What’s unlikable about a loving partner? Nothing. But the character is more than a supportive partner, she’s a human being with her own set of personally traits independent from her marriage. And I personally found her to be really obnoxious from beginning to end. I’m not even saying it was necessarily Gaga’s fault - it was probably more in the writing and direction. The character likely would have had all of the same qualities if Bareilles had played her, but IMO Bareilles has a warmer presence, and that might have helped temper those obnoxious qualities somewhat.
