I loved this nighttime soap opera, but this seems unnecessary unless it is done as a parody. But who knows? I thought I’d really hate Soongebob and ended up really liking it. So anything is possible depending on the creative team and execution. I do think this would struggle to find an audience on Broadway. The show wasn’t exactly a ratings darling, but then again neither were the movies that Waitress or The Band’s Visit were based on.
This would be great if they create a spot in the show that allows for country singers to make weekly guest appearances without having to play a role in the plot. Countless award winning country singers would LOVE to make their Broadway debuts plus this would entice ticket buyers.
The series was filmed entirely in Nashville and the country music industry embraced the series so an endless array of major country artists made cameos throughout the series run.
I love the idea of revolving country stars in the show. It’s not a bad idea at all, especially since there’s really no show running or coming up that can be directly marketed to that demographic.
A friend of mine spotted a majority of the cast (except Connie and Hayden) having dinner last week in the city. A reunion of some sort or were they in town for this?
Lord, that show turned into such a trainwreck. But the music was so good. It was really the music and Juliette that kept me watching as long as I did -- she was such an interesting character and Hayden played her so well. I was rooting hard for the character to turn her life around, although I finally got worn down by the constant up and down and up and down and up and down and up and down. If they work with some of the songwriters they used on the show, and majorly tighten up the storyline -- which the format by itself will force them to do -- this could be good. They won't have time this time for sixteen million ups and downs.
I loved the series during its run on ABC. When it was cancelled then picked up on CMT, I shortly stopped watching it after the death of Rayna James. The plot lines just went into uninteresting places I just stopped watching.

If there’s no Rayna in this show, then don’t even bother.
I still found things to like about the show on CMT, however I wish they could have worked it out with Britton to stay on for one more season, wrapping the series up and just ending it with her. But I’ll say that her death was one of the most WTF, jaw dropping unexpected moments in TV history, they kept it secret so well.

Connie Britton had been quite vocal on all media when she was leaving the series so it wasn’t unexpected. We knew her character was being written out but we had no idea how. They lead her into scenarios to tease her demise, most notably the stalker plot line. I, like many, thought the stalker would kill her. When she made it out and that scenario wrapped itself up, that car accident came out of nowhere. Then we had her alive in the hospital, so all was good again. Her final demise was a doozy as THAT was unexpected as most things in life are. Connie Britton made sure Rayna James’ exit would be done realistically and respectfully.
Now... regarding this Broadway musical adaptation, without Rayna James, there is no purpose. NASHVILLE’s heart IS Rayna James. Everything else is built around her.
“...From that rich DNA, we will be building an original story with entirely original music written by major Nashville and Broadway songwriters," said Delman in a statement.
This reads to me like they’re taking the Bring It On approach. Like, new characters entirely. But if it has the feel, style, and heart of the original series this has potential and hopefully they’ll be able to come up with new characters as good as Rayna.
If they do keep the same characters, I’m curious if any of the actors of the series might be involved. They all obviously have name recognition (at least in regards to selling this show) and can most definitely sing.
