42nd Street auditions#1

Hi, my theatre company is putting on a production of 42nd street and auditions are this summer. I dont really know how to tap dance so I was thinking of going for the role of Dorothy Brock. The only thing confusing me is that on every website I go onto it says she is an alto. However, on the 2017 London cast recording and the 2001 Broadway revival she does an extremely high soprano scale at the end of Shadow Waltz do I need to be able to do this to be able to play her? Any help or audition tips would be extremely helpful.

You can still play her if you believe in your abilities.  If you are a strong alto why not?  Every production is different and unique.  You don't know the musical director's preference so don't go by what another production had done.  Do it your way the best you can as an alto.  Forget that high soprano part, since you probably won't have to do it any way.  God luck.

That’s exactly what I was hoping. I can definitely sing her part the way it is on the original Broadway recording so hopefully that’s the version they will be after instead of the new revivals. Why is it that sopranos always seem to be able to get the roles instead of the altos! Thank you.
