Anyone see this in Chicago?

I just happened to be in town during the run and saw this.....am I alone in thinking this is not going to be a hit?

I have to say I found the score unmemorable and more ear grating and annoying than hummable. the set seemed completely over designed (they barely use more than a square inch of most of it.) Poor Lilli Cooper was terribly miscast. I still think Sarah Stiles plays the same character in everything. Santino Fantana is good in it, but it feels like a waste of his talent....the musical want doesn't seem enough for a musical, the jokes seem stock and more about irony than character development.

I keep hearing this is the best of the musical season on broadway this year.  Really?

A friend who saw it in Chicago said that he and the rest of the audience were in hysterics from start to end. Based on that, I bought tickets.

I tend to agree with macnyc on this one. I ended up seeing it 3 times, thanks to the lottery. By the end of the 3rd viewing, I liked it more than I did the first time. There were too many jokes, most of which I didn’t find particularly funny, the music was in memorable, except for the opening to Act 2, which was pretty funny. The cast is fantastic, although most of the characters they portray aren’t memorable or well thought out. I also saw the Cher Show in Chicago, which I enjoyed so much more. I think Be More Chill will win a lot of Tony’s, just from the buzz and what it’s about. Although I want a different show to win. I am seeing it again in NYC though, since it’s the only show that I wanted to see on Monday. I do want to see what changes they make. It will definitely be interesting once it starts previews, that’s for sure.

In response to did anyone see this in Chicago, there's a thread discussing the Chicago tryout.  But you probably already knew that. . .

Saw it in Chicago and haven't thought much about it since until I've started seeing ads here for the B'way run. I wish the show well, there were/are some fun elements, but the whole just didn't add up to a smash hit for me. But they've had a few months to work on it so who knows.

I honestly loved it when I saw early in its tryout here in Chicago. I mean sure, I haven’t really thought about it in the five months since then, but I went away raving about it for at least the week after. I hope it sees equal acclaim in New York!
