Gypsy Who Should Play Herbie & Uncle Jocko ?

I have a feeling they will go "Hollywood" and cast Will Farrell Mathew Broadrick or Steve Carrell as Herbie.  However they should cast Nathan Lane as Uncle Jocko or Herbie.  As for the brief part of Mama Rose's Dad George Hearn!

I guess it depends on how old Rose will actually be in the movie, but maybe they could convince Sondheim to reprise his iconic performance as Rose's dad from the original cast recording :P

You know, CZJ as Mazeppa might not be a terrible idea! I usually think her musical chops are greatly exaggerated here, but we know she started as a dancer.

For some reason, I thought of him, too, for Herbie. He'd be ideal, but maybe too old for McCarthy? 

I was also thinking Eric McCormack, especially if Melissa McCarthy is cast. I can see those two as a couple. And Shaloub as Uncle Jocko ?

Gypsy doesn't need to have a good voice so I'd be willing to give Emma Watson redemption for Belle if she was cast as Louise. Emma Stone could be another possibility.

Saoirse Ronan can sing and would be a great Louise. Alongside Melissa, Shalhoub probably would be too old. John C Reilly would be a great Herbie.

I feel like Melissa will be a great Rose. Her SNL sketch of the Broadway Super Bowl gives me Mama Rose vibes. Saorise is quite a nice suggestion too. I suggested Dove Cameron for Glinda but she'd be a great Dainty June aswell.

Saorise Ronan would be a perfect Louise opposite McCarthy. I love the Tony Shaloub I idea but he might indeed be too old- how about someone like Ewen McGregor as Herbie?

I'm not sure why we're worrying about the dream casting of a character who would be onscreen for about two minutes, but Shalhoub has already played Uncle Jocko in the Bette Midler version. I can't imagine that there's so much to mine in the character that he'd be looking to return to it.

But Alfred Molina might be a terrific Herbie.

It's probably not going to be made, but if it is it is most definitely not going to have an all-white cast.

(Which puts a whole new spin on the oddly worded title of this thread.  Should a gypsy play Herbie and Uncle Jocko, and would said gypsy count as a person of color?)

At first I marveled at the question of who would play Uncle Jocko being of concern to anyone.
But now it's all worthwhile.

Waters as Jocko is casting magic.. even the idea of him sleeping with one of the stage mothers is wacky and wonderful.

And what's wrong with Daniel Radcliffe doing the part? His dancing wasn't bad in How to Succeed.

His dancing was 'adequate' and took him over a year to learn what he did. Watch some clips and see what a brilliant DANCER this part calls for--then go look at Charlie Stemp.

That might have the effect of making Rose seem more homophobic than Machiavellian.

Nathan Lane would be a great Uncle Jocko and I agree with whomever put forward Dove Cameron as Dainty June.  I think Anna Kendrick would be a good choice for Gypsy.  As far as Herbie, it depends on who plays Rose but I could see Bradley Cooper in the role, though I doubt that would happen.
