This is so exciting! Guess we found out what the next Disney Musical will behttps://www.broadwayworld.com/article/Breaking-Bless-My-Soul-Public-Theater-Will-Stage-HERCULES-at-the-Delacorte-Theatre-This-Summer-20190206
While I'm happy to see a Hercules musical... partnering with Disney seems like a complete betrayal of everything The Public stands for. I mean. Not to be hyperbolic. But. It seems real lame.
Getting the outdoor theme park show vibes
Except it's for their PublicWorks program, which is a massive community engagement initiative. This ain't exactly a commercial venture. This isn't going to be a theme park show. To say that shows ignorance of the people involved and what this program is.
And for Public Works too... I'm kind of shocked Disney is allowing this. They fight so hard to control their narrative. Public Works shows are huge, with local community members filling out their casts. It's not exactly the shiny, polished finished product they usually look for.I mean. I'm stoked. But a little confused.
The guy playing Hercules is gonna be amazing.
You know, if BWW would have waited for an official press release from The Public and/or Disney, maybe we would have more reasoning/content on why they're doing Hercules. Just saying.
Given PublicWorks' history of using community dance groups, martial artists, gospel singers (among others)... Hercules is a really great choice as a property for them.

And he would be amazing!I always presumed that if/when this came to the stage the role of Hercules would have to be played by two different actors, with the switch happening during "One Last Hope". We shall see!And another exciting question... Who will play Hades and what will that character design look like?!
I wouldn't expect huge production values for this. PublicWorks have a distinctly DIY-feel.
Hailey Kilgore, I'm just saying.
It will be performed for five days. I don't expect a full scale, major set, amazing technical effects production.
FINALLY!!!!!!!!I love that it's playing at the outside theater at Central Place! It feels more authentic with an "classic" Greek mythology show. Sadly, it might affect a potential Broadway transfer. And let it please be Jelani! I lived him as Kristoff and his voice would be amazing as Herc. Would love to see Norm Lewis as Zeus! I'm pulling for Barrett Wilbert Weed as Meg. She would be the definition of Meg. Can't wait to see who's Hades!!!

You guys do realize that this is a 5-day run, so unless they extend, only a small handful are going to actually be able to see it. Public Theatre donors get first dibs, then VIPs, industry, etc.
CedricOates said: "If this makes it to Broadway at the same time as Hadestown, there will be two shows with both Hades and the Muses/Fates. And yet they’re so different it’s very interesting to see different interpretations of these mythological characters"If PublicWorks is developing it, I doubt Broadway is the goal. After this one-weekend production, the intention is probably stock and amateur licensing, like Freaky Friday or the original plan for Newsies.
Does anyone know how tickets work? Apparently, it's different than any show
It's the same as any other Delacorte show: you show up-day of or enter their digital lottery.
I'm so excited, I can't wait!
If licensing is the goal, they'll probably record an OCR for reference, right?
