Im wondering if anyone has heard word of what the next Disney musical on Broadway will be. I know right now they have three running and they dont like to have more than that at a time. But I would anticipate them closing Aladdin in a year or so.
They already produced:
Beauty and the Beast Lion King Aida Tarzan Mary Poppins The little mermaid Aladdin Peter and the star catcher Newsies Frozen.
Id like to see:
Hercules Pocahontas Dumbo A show where they focus on the villains story (... like cruella, maleficent, Ursula (with like Harvey ) ) Tangled Mulan
I would also love to see a broadway run for Hunchback and jungle book.
Coco would be refreshing and an awesome show to adapt. Kinda already has an Act 1 finale in it too. Just don't get the Lopezes on it; get the other songwriter from the movie.
(Also, Moana, but Lin is likely too busy for that right now)
Fairly certain it will be Hercules. It has already been announced that it is in developement and interestingly enough at the Disney On Broadway Concert Series at Epcot this year, before the show they flash posters and pictures of all of the current and previous Disney On Broadway shows and among those was a Hercules poster..... so odds are strong I would say that, that will be the next Broadway venture Disney will pursue. Although I would not expect it to debut for a few more years as Disney usually takes at least 2-4 years to develop and produce their shows after one has already debuted. Ex: 2014, Aladdin to 2018, Frozen, 1994, Beauty and the Beast, 1997, The Lion King. With the exception of Tarzan and Little Mermaid Being back to back in 2006 and 2007, and we saw how well both those shows did....

Don't be so sure about that. The same thing was said in Disney circles when Frozen was in development and that Frozen was taking over the New Amsterdam. Aladdin works because it has the Princess aspect plus a ton of stuff that appeals to those not interested in the Princess aspect. Plus there is a live action film coming out this year that should renew interest.
Also, I don't think we know that they prefer to run 3 musicals at a time. I've never heard that from Tom Schumacher or any of their executives. I think they are running 3 because this is what works financially right now. If a 4th musical also works, why not run it?
My wish list:
Tangled--similar to Aladdin you have the Princess stuff and a likable lead male. My dream is for a Zachary Levi-Mandy Moore stunt cast here.
Beauty and the Beast revival featuring songs from the live action movie. They already have a version of this running on the Disney Fantasy cruise ship so it's not a stretch.
Mary Poppins revival. I want Gavin Lee back on Broadway.
I wish they could figure out The Little Mermaid and maybe try an Off-Broadway run. The book would need massive retooling though.
I could see Hercules potentially doing well. It has a fan base and Disney has recently been releasing a lot of Hercules merchandise at the Disney Store and online. I'm attending the Epcot Broadway Concert series later in the month with Ashley Brown and Josh Strickland so will check out the intro video. By the way, Arielle Jacobs live streamed her concert this past Friday on Instagram.
I'm attending an event at the Disney on Broadway offices in April so maybe they will give us a hint at what is next.
Honestly, I 100% wouldn't be against a Hercules musical adaptation, there's a lot that they could do with it. Although a Beauty and the Beast revival would be beautiful!
The film already essentially has a solid two-act structure, with "Un Poco Loco" being the clear act 1 finale. Obviously extending the song would be required but it'd be a great breaking point for intermission.
It’s a shame they didn’t trust hunchback enough. If only they hired a more competent director then things might’ve been different. I’m still mesmerized by that score.

Chicago Shakespeare Theatre was supposed to premiere Bedknobs and Broomsticks this year but it has been cancelled due to the death of the director.
"Originally slated to appear in the 2019/20 Season, SIX has been rescheduled into the timeframe of the previously announced world premiere musical, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, which has been postponed due to the untimely death of our friend, Director Rachel Rockwell. Rachel was an integral, creative force behind this new musical’s development, so our team concluded that, at a later date, we can produce the show that Rachel envisioned, and we wanted to bring to the stage."
I am unsure what to think about the speculation that 'Hercules' could make it to Broadway. I think that it has potential as a stage musical ("Zero to Hero" would make an EXCELLENT Act Two Opener, and "I Won't Say (I'm In Love)" is also a great tune), but I think it would be foolish to take it straight to the Great White Way. It is one of the more obscure animated films in the Disney stable, and has a pretty small fandom compared to The Lion King and Frozen. Considering all the time, money and effort spent bringing megamusicals like this to life, applying this treatment to a cult favourite is a very big risk for a company as cautious as Disney. In addition,. Hercules will also be affected by comparisons to Aladdin. Both films had a similar tone and feel (They are comedic adventure stories centred on a male hero from ancient mythology, with big action sequences and anachronistic humour) but Aladdin is the more famous of the two. If Aladdin is still on Broadway when Hercules opens, the newer musical could undermine the older one. If Aladdin closes to make way for Hercules, then Hercules will be regarded as too much of a copy. Either way, Hercules is going to be overshadowed by its Tony-winning predecessor.
I think that Hercules would work best as a musical for regional and amateur theatre. If they want to take it to Broadway, Disney Theatrical should use the same strategy employed for Aladdin - they should give it a few tryouts and upgrade it to Broadway if it shows potential.

I actually agree! I would combine Un Poco Loco with the song Imelda sings as one big number, with curtain falling with Miguel heading towards Ernesto's with Hector and Imelda lost without Miguel. Think there's strong potential to make a big act 1 finale with those two musical moments and still with strong emotion in the middle.
I'd be much more interested in Coco (or Moana) than any of the 90s Disney stuff that hasn't been adapted yet personally. A lot of cool stagey elements that could easily come into play with either of them.

Well I’m not 100% sure if I’ll be up for a stage version of Coco. But how you are picturing it sounds perfect.
I can confirm Disney is working on a Hercules stage adaptation, and we are getting it SOON (much sooner than a lot of people are probably expecting). But it is NOT being developed for Broadway. They are taking a different route with this one. That’s all I can say! Official announcement should be coming any day now though!
