I saw it in LA a few years ago. It's actually pretty fun - tonally I'd say it's a bit like SCREAM QUEENS as a musical. Not a memorable score or a show that will change your life, but an enjoyable evening out.
Caught it this past week - absolutely loved it. Especially having seen Alice By Heart & Superhero the week prior, I was so relieved to see something genuinely good. The cast, book, and score are top notch, and it's a hell of a good time. With a bigger production budget, I think this show could really be a hit. It felt a lot like the brain child of Heathers & Bring It On, for reasons both obvious and intricate.
I really recommend it, especially since you can see it for very cheap atm. Is it perfect? Absolutely not. But I walked out of that theater feeling more optimistic about modern musical theatre than I have all season, including Broadway's newest offerings. Hoping this gets the fine tuning and love it deserves.
I saw the concert version at Joe’s Pub so I wanted to check out the full production. The theater is actually in the back of a bar that specializes in absinthe and they give a coupon for the bar. I didn’t stick around after the show so I don’t know if any of the cast stays after the show.
As for the show, I really liked it. The cast is talented and they are hawt so it’s enjoyable on that level. Lauren Zakrin really needs to be put into a high profile role somewhere. She’s perfect here. The others aren’t far behind. Everyone gets a moment to shine. Cathy Ang (KPOP) steals your heart with hers. Sydney Parra makes me feel bad about missing Cleopatra. And hard to believe Jenny Rose Baker was in Annie Get Your Gub, she totally looks age appropriate. MTV should film this and put it on their network.
I caught the Saturday matinee (it was press show as well) and had a great time! I'm impressed with the set quality for such a small theatre.
It's a super fun show - I'd say a mashup of Bring It On / Heathers / I Know What You Did Last Summer with a hint of The Wolves. All the songs felt like they had a message/story to tell rather than just act as filler (my favorite was the Act II opener (Cathy Ang's song about "the little things" - that's all I can say without spoilers). The book was funny without being absurd or campy. Overall, super production value all around.
The theatre is very small with no bad view so grab the best value and grab a ticket (pom-poms optional - lol). Throughout the show I kept thinking this would be great on 42nd at Signature or Theatre Row. Hope it makes the move :)
I thought this was really weak. The book meanders all over the place and the songs are cheesy and unmemorable. The "thriller" aspect is practically non-existent and the ending unsurprising. With the way show-score members are over rating this I was expecting the next Heathers. Someone needs to tell them they don't have to gush over a show just because they got comps. And there sure were alot of comped friends and family in the audience hootin and hollering at all the unfunny jokes.
Lauren Zakrin and Sydney Parra do stand out though. See it if the genre interests you, but keep your expectations low. I doubt the critics are going to be as kind to this as the show score reviewers have been.
I went this evening and have to say I absolutely enjoyed myself and recommend it. It is fun! Plain and simple! I had a blast, and by the sound of it so did the entire audience. It was absolutely a mix of Bring It On & Heathers meets Scream. The pacing was great and yes there are some flimsy parts to the book, but it is certainly much tighter than some other off broadway shows this season. The music was smart and made you laugh and forget the outside world for 2 hours. The cast to me was extremely tight. Lauren Zakrin truly shows off her talents and commands that stage. She is fun and believable...and has a hell of a belt. The other cast member that truly was on the same level as Lauren was Wonu Ogunfowora. Takes her character a little bit to get going but when she has her moment she takes them and sings the heck out! What a voice (End of Act 1 & her duet with Lauren's character). She is a force to be reckoned with. Plus she was always on, her facial expressions were in it to win it. The rest of the cast was very good and they seemed to all work well together, especially in some of the more "tense" scenes.
If you want to go and have a fun night out and see a show that will make you laugh and enjoy the reason we have this escape we call "Theater", please go see it!
I saw the show last night and I have to say, I enjoyed it very much. The only teeny annoyance I had was when the people behind me wouldn't stop complaining about how long intermission was. Like...there were things to take care of on stage. Otherwise, it was a fun show and I really liked the songs! Hoping for a cast recording. I recommend this musical if you're looking for something less mainstream than Broadway and just a fun night at the theater! Also, on Sundays they have a special "pay what you wish" promotion supporting The Trevor Project, so that's a great thing that they're doing.
I'd recommend this musical! Go in open-minded. I definitely was not expecting the ending....I thought it was someone who it turned out was definitely not the criminal I thought they were. Go see this musical and you're in for a treat!
We are going this Sunday evening. Daughter is a High School cheerleader and very excited to see this. As it is, seeing Bring It On! in Los Angeles (was it really 2011?) is part of the reason she wanted to do high school cheer.

It was a full and enthusiastic house on Sunday night. I felt like one of the oldest people there. Definitely a show speaking to 18-30 year olds
Daughter enjoyed it more than me. Although she picked up on the numerous plot holes and nonsensical developments. She also wanted more actual cheerleading.
Cast is really quite strong. The weakest, to me, were Louis Griffin as Clark and Kaitlyn Frank as Annleigh. Ms. Frank was really the only cast member who read too old for the role for me.
The show has a catchy pop score. But, the songs did sort of run together. Too many instances of layering parts on top of each other - and reliance on verse- dialog- verse - dialog. Also, almost all Act One songs were teen angst. The murders were well done.
Major kudos to Cathy Ang who does steal the show with the Act 2 opener. Mimi Scardulla also brought more to her cardboard character than that type of role usually gets. And Ms. Scardulla could move - bringing down the house.
I particularly enjoyed Jenny Rose Baker who gave off a young Nancy McKeon aura.
It's not a heavy show. It's not a particularly inventive show. (The set was kind of overwhelming for the small space and limiting as a result)
It was a fun evening. I could see this having a good life in college and community theatre productions.
We are happy we extended our NYC area stay to see this show.
Saw this Saturday and found it thoroughly enjoyable, despite a technical glitch that briefly stopped the show. The cast are all pretty great, though Ms. Ang, Scardulla and Parra were the most interesting. Yes, it's a predictable, maybe thin book. Some, not all, of the music is the same format. So what? The appeal is genuine and original. Ms. Beyersdorfer's set is meant for a larger stage, but remarkable in its detail and precision. The Tigers deserve a life beyond Theatre 80. And that place needs a solid house manager and FOH staff, pronto.
