Yup...a year or two ago...i don't remember how mant many years in I was, but i dont remember doing it every year. People change jobs and stop being eligible. Cant blame them. I think i just photocopy my id.
Last time I renewed, it was the long distance membership. My renewal is in the spring.
I've been asked every couple of years to send in documentation that I still qualify. Yes, I did pay $40.00 recently to renew. I don't know if the 100 mile option has been discontinued. You should just ask them.
As for re-certifying, I haven't had to do that yet but I definitely remember seeing something about having to do it every few years (don't remember how many).

They've been asking me for a renewal of proof for about a year, but still let me buy tickets. So... I wouldn't worry too much about it.
If you have a staff ID you can make a copy and send that to TDF as proof of eligibility as well. At least that worked for me when I set up my account.

I was asked a month ago to renew (which is a thing that happens from time to time). I sent my renewal in and have yet to hear back and am still getting the "submit proof of eligibility" message from them. I've followed up multiple times and have now just given up. if it becomes a problem in buying tickets then i'll worry about it.
They have been asking me for that info for over five years.
I've tried to send it several times via email and it always gets booted back to me. The past several years I've just stopped trying and still have my membership.

so if you live outside the NYC area you can no longer apply for membership? I qualify but live in California, and take theater trips to new york every year

I think what above posters are referring to is the $10 membership that was offered if you lived within 100 miles of nyc. I always paid $10 and live in Buffalo. I’m not sure if $10 is an option anymore.
It sounds like $40 will be for everyone.

Last year (February) I received my first "proof of eligibility" notice from them about renewal. I was enrolled as a recent graduate (up to age 26) but was I turning 27 in 2018. I have since enrolled under "full time non-exempt employee" and did need to submit a letter from my HR department. I received an email shortly after saying they received my proof of eligibility and updated my membership. Yesterday, I received a notification it's time to renew (for $40) but was not told I need to send in eligibility again.
