Nowhere? Chicago has a relatively high reported rates of both racism and homophobia, compared to other cities of similar size. The MAGA claim is also coming only from TMZ and isn't substantiated by any other other news channel or police, so while the attack remains horrifying, let's not give into the knee jerk reaction of over-simplifying yet another hate crime by making the news about Trump. Not to mention further spread fake news.

Per police reports, he is stable and doing better now. Hope these criminals get appropriately punished.

I would recommend that people temper their outrage until more confirmation comes out. Some of the details just don’t make sense to me. Who comes that well prepared for a random attack? The first thing that came to mind for me was that “backwards B” incident in Pittsburgh in 2008. If this is true, it is truly horrific and it deserves all the outrage we can muster. If it turns out to be a hoax, it can undermine the credibility of real victims for years to come. Let the investigators do their job. Then get mad.

I agree. Two assailants just happened to be walking around with masks and a rope where the actor was eating. It is like there is a gap in the story.

What worries me is that I read that he had already received death threats. If that is true, then this may not have been random and makes it even more scary.

The Chicago PD has confirmed Smollett's account of the attack. He has received death threats at work and recently turned down extra security from Fox.

Well this story is looking more and more like he might have staged this whole thing. Apparently the 2 guys the police had found and interviewed were actually extras on empire and that he might have done this cause he thought he was being written off the show. Either way this story is still bad if he's telling the truth or if he put on a hoax.

Something is still off with this whole thing, there's gotta be more to this whole story.

From the start, the way he described it, it had to be people who knew his whereabouts at that particular time.  Which means they were likely connected to the show or connected his hotel (or wherever he way staying).

Did they work together often?  Were they interacting in scenes together?  Did they ever even meet each other?  I remember reading elsewhere that said they were extras.  I was a "featured extra" (whatever that even means) in a scene with Juliette Lewis and Shirley MacLaine.  I'd love for someone to ask them how well they know me.  The brothers were just returning from Nigeria, where homosexuality is against the law, so there's that little nugget as well.  Now, I could be totally wrong, but the press is certainly winning gold for freestyle competitive conclusion-jumping.

It is nice to always assume people are good/honest in the first place, but we also have to realize that there are a lot of crazy people out there.

Many people, especially the new generation, are raised with the idea that playing the victim role is the way to go. For years I have expressed my concern about this (also on this board). The victim role is used to an extreme level and especially used as a way to get attention, sympathy, fame and dragging down other groups that do not fit your ideals. I have seen whole groups using it to demand extremely out of balance levels in casting and representation and use the victim role to explain it away. There really are no limits.

Situations like this (if it's true), happen all the time, it's just that most are not discovered because the victim role is the best cover.

It is indeed very disrespectful to actual victims of hate crimes, but we must not forget that for these people the victim role is above everything. It is part of their identity, how they were raised. In a way it works the same as religion.

The 2 suspects are extremely dodgy as are that particular police department who are also well known for lying.

A homophobic pile on by both sides would not surprise me in the slightest.

It’s pretty obvious there was no attack. But they can’t say that, cause then the Chicago PD will be “racist” and it will be more ammo for black culture against police.

He lied, plain and simple. Theres no evidence, he refuses to corporate with police. Wouldn't you hand over your phone to catch the people that did you harm? Wouldn't you alert security ASAP?? Wouldn't you take the noose off your neck immediately? Wouldn't the hotel security see the noose and you severely beaten? Why are there racist trump supporters in chicago at 2 am on one of the coldest nights of the year screaming MAGA? Why did Jussie claim they were white rednecks then they turn out to be Nigerian empire extras? Why are racist whites watching Empire to begin with? Why did he bring up Maga in the second interview and not the first?

It’s pretty clear none of these make sense, and that he lied. I believed him 100% untill the cracks in his story started to catch up with him.

His case is now going to the grand jury, and I’m sure he will walk away with a slap on the wrist, don’t want the grand jury being called racist now do we?
