Visited New York in 1996 specifically to see Buckley in Sunset Blvd. I think her renditions of the songs are the best. Unfortunately the night I had my ticket she was out.

i never did get to see her.

I saw Tovah as Rose...flashing her undies was equally scary yet in character live.

Her Rose was rather scary

SweetLips22 said: "To Skip23--my comment was VERY tongue in cheek as I was[un]lucky enough to see her Roses Turn on YouTube before being Whipped off forever. Pity, as it should be compulsory viewing in every acting studio.

To her credit she was excellent as the President in something I binged recently. She 'died' and came back to life--a bit like all of her performances obviously.

https://www.broadwayworld.com/los-angeles/article/BWW-Review-Timeless-Classic-HELLO-DOLLY-Returns-in-Lustrous-Revival-at-OCs-Segerstrom-Center-20190129

According to this review by Michael Quintos except for the Sunday night performance that nealb1 (Thanks for the review!) saw she missed all the other shows during the week in the OC.  His review for Jessica Sheridan and the show is really good pointing out...

"To those worried about a future date in the national tour's run in which they will have to miss Ms. Buckley in the title role for any reason, I have two words for you: don't worry. As bummed as I was not being able to see Ms. Buckley's long-anticipated take on musical theater's most infamous matchmaker outside of Anatevka, Dolly Levi (and I really really wanted to see Ms. Buckley), her admirable understudy Ms. Sheridan---joyfully cheeky and adorably spunky as one might expect in the role---is a terrific, wonderfully game substitute, earning every bit of her raucous standing ovation that greeted her during the final bows of Friday evening's performance".

?   She signed up for a tour... which mean she's supposed to perform where the show goes no matter what. If she's sick thats an entire different thing, she's not not performing based on the location.

Was this a paid BWW review for the tour since it seems a good number of people will be seeing Jessica?

Does BWW pay?

This fiasco reminds me a little bit of Alice Ripley's N2N tour attendance (or lack thereof).

"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022) "Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009) "Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

Fiasco?  What fiasco?  Apparently, Betty Buckley was unable to perform due to illness.  It happens.  No fiasco.

Fiasco?  That is such a harsh word to be throwing around.  It does seem like she has missed performances in every stop.  But you know; sometimes a bad cold is hard to shake.  I wish her and the rest of the tour well.

Was at the pantages tonight and Betty was there in full force. Sure there are some small things here or there that I thought Bernadette did better (mostly all things food related), but it doesn’t matter— Buckley commands the room the entire time.

Most impressively, though, is how well this touring production stands up to the Broadway one. It remains the ultimate crowdpleaser, and the tunes sounded just as timeless here as they did in NYC. Sets seemed identical, they used the pasarelle identically, etc. The crowd was rapturous throughout, including a standing ovation by many in the orchestra during the title number, and Put On Your Sunday Clothes was the showstopper it always is.

I’m not a big fan of Hello Dolly itself, but this production is such a big fat winner that it’s hard to deny. We’re spoiled to get most touring companies so early in LA— it seems this show has only improved since early reports in October.

What a ridiculous and inane, if not totally elitist, comment. Anyone who is a true theater lover will support and relish performances wherever they’re given. And if I’m not mistaken, South Coast Repertory, a Tony Award recipient for regional theater, is right next door.

The Orange County comment was clearly a joke, guys.

I am big. It’s the REVIVALS that got small.

Looks like she got some pretty good reviews in L.A.

With the exception of the "DailyBruin."

Outdated?  Something my grandparents would have liked?

Well, duh.  It was created in the 1960s.  It's a revival.  That's what happens.

I know it's a college paper, but show a little knowledge there.  This is a lush production of a recent revival.  Even if the storyline is beneath your age group, as a critic, you have to be at least a little more honest in your appraisal of the production.  If that's his honesty, it's a bit limited.

Understood that It might not appeal to college kids, but if you're reporting on it as a critic you have to be at least a little open-minded about it.  That kind of pull quote looks like it comes out of a high school newspaper.  A storyline that is not "captivating" and he considers "predictable"?   I can only imagine what the rest of the article looks like.

I'd expect something a little better out of ucla.  But then again, maybe not.

John Dudhope...What a joke that review is. That dude is clueless. He has no idea what Dolly is about and the importance to musical theater and probably has no idea it's based on Wilder's The Matchmaker.

Who's reading that review at UCLA and plans on seeing Dolly. Ha

In response to Master Tudhope's headline that Hello, Dolly! is a "poor translation into modernity," I would remind him that the musical was prominently featured in a 2008 film that was set in the distant FUTURE.

That film was a blockbuster smash at the box office, won a Golden Globe Award, was nominated for an Academy Award, and topped Time's list of Best Movies of the Decade.

Could Master Tudhope learn nothing from Hello, Dolly! in WALL-E?

The Daily Bruin has nothing to do with the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television. Unless something has changed of late, the newspaper doesn't cover campus theater and theater students rarely read the campus paper.

I went to the show today. Hello Dolly was such good fun. One of the best musicals I’ve ever seen. Betty Buckley is a superb Dolly indeed. The sets and costumes are gorgeously colorful. I’ve not seen a musical that is part beautiful and part hilarious since Rogers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella!

Thank you BroadwayWorld for the clip of people attending Ms. Buckley’s opening in Dolly in LA. Did I miss something? There are no titles saying who these people are! Except for a few obvious faces, you’re left to guess and I’m sure they are fascinating and interesting folks! Is it too late to edit this piece with names at the bottom of the screen? Just a suggestion.

They’ve gotten very lazy with those.  Opening nights at the Pantages are usually like a scene from the love boat.  The parade of B and C listers is a hoot.
