Hello all.

I am wanting to expand my reading horizons this year and want to dip my toes more into the Sci-Fi / Fantasy genres.

What are some of your favorite stand alone or series of novels that you would recommend?

Recently, my favorite is Ready Player One by Ernest Cline.  Even if you've seen the film, the novel is worth the read.  And if you're a Star Trek fan, Redshirts by John Scalzi is a hoot.  Others I've enjoyed:

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series - Douglas Adams
Dirk Gently duology - Douglas Adams
Chronicles of Narnia - C.S. Lewis
Space Trilogy - C.S. Lewis
His Dark Materials - Phillip Pullman
The Handmaid's Tale - Margaret Atwood
1984 - George Orwell
The Martian Chronicles - Ray Bradbury
Fahrenheit 451 - Ray Bradbury
Slaughterhouse Five - Kurt Vonnegut
Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? - Philip K. Dick
Dune - Frank Herbert
Ringworld - David Niven
Rendezvous With Rama - Arthur C. Clarke
Robot Series - Isaac Asimov
Stranger in a Strange Land - Robert A. Heinlein
A Clockwork Orange - Anthony Burgess
Ender's Game - Orson Scott Card
Jurassic Park - Michael Crichton
Timeline - Michael Crichton
Hunger Games trilogy - Suzanne Collins
Lightning - Dean Koontz

Thank you so much, you two.  I really appreciate it and have added a lot of these to my TBR list.

For myself, I would recommend anything by Brandon Sanderson (especially the Mistborn series.  SOOOOOO good).

And my favorite book of all time which is 11/22/63 by Stephen King.   If you haven't read this please, please, please do yourself a favor.   *sigh*

But, that being said I can't wait to dive into the books on your lists!

Thanks, Erik.  I have added it to my TBR list as well.   I looked up the synopsis and it seems very interesting.

I've had the books for years but for some reason never read them.  I will need to get to them soon.

Speaking of Stephen King, I adore The Eyes of the Dragon, which was a huge stylistic departure for him when it was first published.

I read Eyes of the Dragon a few months ago and I liked it a lot more than I thought it was.  It was very straight forward and matter of fact (which went against his usual style as you mentioned) so it took me a while to get used to it but I ended up really liking it.

Try the myth-based series: The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel. It is really good!
