Shows where actors play scenery? |
Nearly everyone in Jersey Boys picks up a chair at some point. :)
Harry Potter has this with actors playing the books/staircase. Probably more than that... I’ve only seen it once, months ago, but I’m sure someone else can fill in the details.
In the world of opera, the Fura dels Baus production of the Ring cycle extensively used supernumeraries for various scenic effects.

manipulating scenery and PLAYING scenery are two very different concepts of design.
the actors MANIPULATED the scenery in To Kill a Mockingbird
Equity?
Research "physical theater" productions, i.e. Lookingglass Theatre in Chicago. Mary Zimmerman in particular made this style very popular and won the Tony Award for Best Director when her production of Metamophoses transferred to Broadway. She has adapted and directed many other famous novels and stories as well, such as The Odyssey, Argonautika (Jason and the Argonauts), and Treasure Island.
I truthfully don't recall any, but I do know that We The People have been subjected to a certain Talking Yam day in and day out for what seems like an eternity. Does that count?
Caroline, or Change has actors play the washer, dryer, radio, bus, and moon in the show.
Amour is literally a show about a man who develops the power to walk through walls, so that has to be accounted for in any production.
The Wizard of Oz has actors play the trees in the Tin Man introduction scene.
There are a few stage versions of Alice in Wonderland where an actor plays the door/doorknob in the eat me/drink me scene.
Going way back, A Midsummer Night's Dream has the Mechanicals in the play within the play (Pyramus and Thisbe) play the Wall (Tom Snout) and the Moon (Moonshine). As for moving or manipulating scenery, a lot of that depends on the production. Drowsy Chaperone has it written it in the script that actors enter or exit through the refrigerator door as the show within the show comes to life in an apartment. I've seen many Wizard of Oz productions where actors/dancers move the house as part of the tornado scene.
