SIX: THE MUSICAL (CHICAGO / BROADWAY)

I'm so excited about this. Having met the Queens at the stage door in Chicago last week, I think all of them will transfer at least initially. My guess is the casting announcement is more for understudies and the Ladies In Waiting band.

I agree about listening to the cast recording. I went in blind having not listened to it and I'm still humming the tunes in my head over a week later. I bought the digital album the same night as well as the show as well.

Since this has an existing fanbase, I expect to see Beetlejuice/Frozen levels of cosplay from the audience. I saw quite a bit of it in Chicago. I think it's a bit more fun in this case as costumes from that time period aren't as easy to come by. Other than that, I did like the show merch and hope that Broadway has more than one merch stand available. Probably some fun drinks too.

As to costs: rent and salaries don't change because its a shorter show.

Listened to the cast album, watched a few promotional performances on YouTube...this show (IMO) is awful and I do not understand the hype at all.

That being said, congrats to those involved. A job is a job.

I stand corrected!   Feel free to interrupt at any time. But, I'm glad Bujold played the role in the film! (Even though she is not French by birth either)

I mean, if we're diving into it, they wouldn't sound like modern Brits anyway, as the RP as we know it didn't begin developing until the Industrial Revolution, and didn't really take off until after the Revolutionary War. So the Queens in real life probably would have been speaking in a much more rhotic accent (with more pronounced Rs) than what we think of with the modern British accent. An American accent is probably closer to their historical sound.

The show is 75 minutes long. That may be standard concert length, but if they are charging Broadway prices for this thing, they should have an opening act or something, as many concerts do. 75 minutes? Really? The round trip ride to the theater for most people will be longer than that.

However, I did enjoy the clip from the Olivier Awards. I also went to college with Abby Mueller, and am happy for her, assuming she transfers with it.

Hilary & Clinton was pretty dang short and I still felt my money was well spent. 75 mins of quality is different. These girls are belting for the rafters and I think that will appeal to a lot of people. And I think this is a solid venue.

The intentions of a number of posts on here seem, pretty arbitrary at best. “I don’t like it so I’m NOT going”  is never going to be the world’s greatest conversation point.

The cast album and the promotional performances are nothing like the experience of the full show live.  Not even close.  I mean, most musicals aren't, but this one especially.  The cast recording is just a studio version of the numbers and there have been some changes (some of which significantly change the impact of the number) and don't include most of the dialogue.  The songs are indeed catchy, which is why there were fans of the recording without having seen the show, but that's not really what the hype is about.  The dialogue, the performances (of the Chicago cast), the lighting, the choreography, the concert atmosphere, the audience energy...all of these elements create an electrifying cohesion that is extremely effective.  THAT'S what the hype is actually all about.  I initially had little interest in the show and ended up seeing it the first time because I have season tickets to the Shakespeare Theatre in Chicago and it was included as a replacement for the halted premiere of Bedknobs & Broomsticks.  Six is not awful.  Far from it.

Backing up MisterMatt's statement - Haus of Holbein on the recording is just...bizarre and I really didn't like it and couldn't see how it fit in and thought maybe it is just filler. But, in the show, it was wildly fun and entertaining.  Heart of Stone and All I Wanna Do are/can be devastating live on stage - much different than the reaction you get just listening to the songs in isolation.

One of those shows in which a honest  audience vibe is a great part of the show.  I hope they record it before the inevitable “woohoooooing” takes over.

What Tony categories could it be nominated for? It's a shoo-in for Best Musical, Score, and Lighting Design. Probably Best Book, Costumes, and maybe Direction and Choreography. What else? Could any queens get acting noms? I can't think of any who would stand out for awards since it's very much an ensemble show. In the Oliviers, they nominated all six of them as one unit for Supporting Actress.
