This isn't that uncommon...remember Will Chase and Erin Dilly covered for a week when Matthew Brodrick and Kelli O'Hara had time off in "Nice Work If You Can Get It", and Angela Lansbury played Mrs. Anna in "The KIng and I" in the 1970's as a vacation cover.

It makes sense. Losing a start for a week in January could turn away people. It's easier to just have Adam step in and perhaps make one week's worth of Adam fans have a reason to see the show in a very lean month.
This reminds me of the time Stephanie J. Block took over for Sutton in "Anything Goes."
I'm not very savvy when it comes to how the industry works but is this a way to see how they perform in the show before offering them the full-time job as a replacement?

That's one reason for doing it. It all depends on what the producers are willing to pay for –– some are ok with the expense of hiring/rehearsing a one-week replacement, others would just put the understudy on (Stephanie Torns in Waitress or Scott S in Great Comet).
A guess: Andy Karl could have an out or a filming commitment coming up, during which Pascal could also be contracted to take over.
Feels very similar to when Block took over for Foster in ANYTHING GOES while she shot the Bunheads pilot for two weeks. A trial run.

Adam and Anthony Rapp had a show scheduled in San Francisco in January. About a week and a half ago I got an e-mail saying it would be rescheduled to April for "unforeseen scheduling reasons." I guess this is why!
I won't be in New York in January, but I think Adam will sound good singing the Bryan Adams songs.

I doubt any one seeing the show have any idea who the actors on stage are and could care less if one of them is out.
^ Wrong. I am only going to see Andy and have tickets for the 15th. I had to exchange my ticket so yes, people do care and have preferences for actors. Oh, and it's *couldn't* care less.
