Shows that should have made it to Broadway, but never did??

There are two shows I've seen regional productions of that should have made it to Broadway:

WINDY CITY, the musical version of THE FRONT PAGE that was a hit on the West End.   Saw a good production at Papermill in the 1980s...and I LOVE that score.

and   HARMONY, Barry Manilow's musical about a true-life singing group in pre-WW2 Germany.  Saw the Alliance Theatre's gorgeous production a few years ago and thought it was powerful, moving and very very well done.   I saw it twice there and was hoping it could get staged that beautifully again somewhere.    Manilow has recorded a few of the songs, which you might like depending on your feelings about him-- but in the context of the show these songs were phenomenal.     The final number in the show, as the men decide when and how to escape Germany before it's too late, was called STARS IN THE NIGHT and it was stunning.

If you can't make money off-Broadway, why would you transfer?!

I'd vote for Tales of the City as a show I thought had a shot.

Hunchback of Notre Dame's score was incredibly impressive. The raw emotion of that show is something Broadway sorely needs right now.

I still can't believe that THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME never made it to Broadway.  The score is so powerful and is a real crime that Broadway and West End audiences have been denied the opportunity to have it performed on their stages.  In my search for "Everything Hunchback" I came across this production by the King's Academy in WPB, FL ... such talent .. very impressive ... I'd almost go so far as to say I'd  put it right up there next to the Papermill Playhouse production ... and these are high school students.

Children of Eden. Such a beautiful score! I’d love to see a first rate production.

I LOVE the Hunchback cast album. I’m a choral singer and I would honestly sell my soul just to be in the choir for that show...

While I am not sure if either show SHOULD have made it to Broadway, I am still surprised that The Bodyguard and Love Never Dies never came to Broadway for even just a limited run after their respective tours.

The Bodyguard was such a Jebus awful mess of a show, it would have closed before opening night.

Well I didn't want to get into it, but he's a Satanist. Every full moon he sacrifices 4 puppies to the Dark Lord and smears their blood on his paino. This should help you understand the score for Wicked a little bit more. Tazber's: Reply to Is Stephen Schwartz a Practicing Christian

I saw the tour launch at Paper Mill... it was really quite awful minus Deborah Cox.

I though it was awful including her. I’ll never get the accolades for her. I have yet to see her sing properly and not mark her choreography. Maybe I’m just at the wrong performances.

I still think it’s strange that LND never had a brief Broadway run for some sort of promotional run with Phantom.

I am big. It’s the REVIVALS that got small.

Yeah, I typically enjoy her performances and find her to be talented... Her attendance is absolutely atrocious, though.

I think it's a real shame The Tempest with Christopher Plummer from the 2010 Stratford Shakespeare Festival didn't transfer. Too bad, it was a feast for the senses. The supporting cast was electric, especially Julyana Soelistyo as Ariel.
