Hey everyone! Trying to spend as little money as possible on an NYC trip, I'm wondering if any out of towners have any advice on some cheap hotels not too far from the theatres! Obviously want to stay at a place which is safe, but really trying to spend as little as possible. Any help would be great!

Try Airbnb. ... and I’ve also found that the distance to the theater isn’t as important as the distance to the A train or another nearby train station. Just my 2 cents.

You won’t find anything “cheap” near the theater district. Even the Comfort Inn will cost you over $200 a night. You can find Airbnb rentals in Hell’s Kitchem for half that, though.

Price will also change based on the dates you are looking to come in.

It depends on when you are coming, but the Pod hotels are decent and not too expensive. The rooms aren't very big though. I know they have a location on 42nd down the street from Port Authority, but it is a little pricier than their other locations. The one on East 51st street is good and not too far from the theater district.

Air BnB anywhere in Midtown Manhattan and you can walk there.

I did Air BnB when I went to London and it was so much cheaper than a hotel, and just as great.

Omg I feel like an idiot for not even thinking of an Air BNB! I'm not too worried about the luxury of it all, as long as I'm somewhat safe lol. Friend of mine stayed at one cheap hotel (name is escaping me) and she had 4 rats in her room. That's just not what I want lol.

Any specific recommendations for neighborhoods? I'm looking for cheap, not too too far from the theatre district (although walking does not scare me), but again, mainly looking for cheapest pricing options. Wasn't sure where others had look so I can narrow down my search. Thanks a bunch everyone!

I stayed FAR AWAY in October. When visiting from Chicago, I flew into LaGuardia then stayed in or near downtown Flushing at the end of the 7 line.

The YMCA on Northern Blvd ran about $70 a night. Mornings in the steam room and dry sauna. Pack a combination lock for the locker room.

That same week, I also stayed at Chang's airbnb in Fresh Meadows for about $65 each night.

BalconyClub, If the Y doesn't bother you, then I will suggest the Chelsea Hostel in, of course Chelsea.  Convenient to everything.  It's really basic.  Just a bed and sink.  Private room with bath runs about $80 (depends on the time of year.  I have only stayed in Spring, Summer and Fall)  or private room with shared bath is $70.  I mean it is really basic, but is has to be fancier than the Y.

You might also try Priceline’s Express Deals or Name Your Own Price. Before I started traveling (for work) about 1/3 of the year and racking up lots of Hilton points, I partially relied on Priceline and other discount sites for my accommodations for my annual NYC trips. I scored some pretty great deals. You can search by neighborhood and star-rating as well as other filters. You won’t know what hotel you booked until you pay, but I’ve never gotten a bad hotel.

It's closed.  They are gutting it for a new hotel.

Mike, what you want is an excellent location for nothing. Which never happens. No business would go here we are wonderfully close to everything and charge nothing. its ridiculous. The best hotel is the Mandarin Oriental. But its not a cheap hotel. Spending next to nothing near the Theatre District is not going to happen. Personally I would pay more and be close. NYC traffic sucks.  Or use the Subway.

When I was I visiting, I live here now in Jersey, staying further out of the theater district enhanced my visit. I would walk through the city choosing different streets to walk down to and from the theater district and i got to see a lot.

I still love walking at night and looking at displays in store windows and just looking at the lit buildings. I would fantasize about living back here. And now I do!
