If he can find a way to translate the theatricality of it to film, I’m all for it.
Can we wait ten years and let Gaga play Diane?

Ten years ago, I though Jim Carrey as Dan would have been perfection. Today (especially after Kidding) I'm convinced he should play Dr. Madden.

I'm very, very hesitant about a film version of this because the stage version, by design, made the material work in an intimate, almost claustrophobic way, that a film version would lose.
Cooper and Toni Collette do sound like they could nail it, but let's not get ahead of ourselves on Cooper. A STAR IS BORN is a creature of mostly his making, and so was tailor made by him, for him to star in and shine in his own way. Though many actors can get away with one hit musical film in their career (*cough* Ryan Gosling *cough*), I don't want this to be a musical film that flounders because they doubled down on someone who prove themselves once.
Honestly, I'd think Hugh Jackman could reel it in enough to nail this role.

and someone please correct me if i'm wrong (and I'd ReALLY like to be):
didn't Madonna buy the screen rights?

I've never heard Madonna bought the screen rights. But seeing as she said she'd never act in another film, it certainly wouldn't be for her to star in it.

Rob Reiner has openly said he wants to take a crack at Next to Normal, but the show is just so at innately theatrical it would be difficult to figure out how to shoot it so that it doesn't look staged.

Rob Reiner let his option on the film lapse. Couldn't get enough interest or support to make it at the budget level he works at. Writers/ Agents aren't interested in letting it be made on an indie budget which is a shame. And the reason why most musical properties flounder in development for years.

His voice is not Broadway in any sense, but in a film, sure. Doubt it will happen though, the movie being made at all that is.

Dream casting for this movie:
Diana - Meryl Streep (or Lady Gaga in 10 years)
Dan - Bradley Cooper
Natalie - Saorise Ronan (or Lili Reinhart)
Gabe - Ansel Elgort
Henry - Timothée Chalamet
Dr. Fine - Ryan Gosling
Dr. Madden - Eddie Redmayne
Wow this would be a dream...

Meryl Streep? Just go all the way and get Maggie Smith as Diana in your geriatric granny-fantasy film.

I agree with this 1000%

Honestly, this made me gasp. She would have been brilliant.
If we're talking about Coulda, Woulda, Shoulda's with Diana; if Betty Buckley were 30 years younger she would be brilliant. I'd kill to hear her I Miss The Mountains.

Why wait 10 years? She could play it now.

Gaga is only 32. Diana should be in her 40s.
