You could have asked the same question in 1962.

Here are some really wonderful new musicals that not everyone that views this board may be familiar with, but are worth checking out:

  • Hadestown
  • Hundred Days
  • Miss You Like Hell
  • Twelfth Night (Shaina Taub's...album coming out this month I think?)
  • Six (London pop musical about the lives of King Henry's 6 wives)

Those are just some in my Spotify library at the moment. I also highly recommend Be More Chill, even if you're skeptical.

YES MISS YOU LIKE HELL ????????

I was skeptical about BMC. Didn’t really know anything about it but I have a friend working on it. Saw it. Enjoyed it. Don’t know how long it will last on Broadway though.

I LOVED Six! Saw it at the Edinburgh Fringe this past August, and would love to see it off-broadway sometime!
I recommend the album as well!

because no one cares about quality. They rush to put shows on Broadway. In reality half the shows you see that have flopped have no business of EVER touching a Broadway stage. Broadway isn't the only place work has to go. Producers are so quick to get this on Broadway and barley use any of the preview period cause they think their show is a hit.

This season is chugging along like the majority of every season for about 100 years.  "Bad" musicals (however you choose to define it) have always been plentiful.  It's rare that the ratio tips as high as 50% in favor of hits (which could also be considered "bad" depending on your personal standards).  There is nothing significantly different happening now.

August Rush is a new musical to be mounted here in Chicago at Aurora Paramount next spring. The director is John Doyle (Color Purple revival). I am excited for this one and hope it goes to Broadway next season 2019. And a regional award to this theater.... here is hoping.

I think your post begs the question: Are you talking about mainstream, Broadway productions, that are aimed at children and tourists? I think there will always be a selection of these. And its good to remember these shows provide many jobs and entertainment for years. But as other people have posted theres a lot of interesting theatre happening off Bway, in regional theatres and in development. Just throw out a wider net than just the latest tribute show or movie adaptation. And some of those are pretty good too!
