Having seen the show at ART - I will say that this BELONGS on Broadway. An excellent show - maybe with a slight tweak to the book - but an excellent moving production.
A second stage or other off broadway production would help the team clean the book up a bit. Loved it at the ART but it needs work before a broadway production.
With Diane Paulus in London this winter for Waitress, and then directing Hair on TV this Spring, I’m assuming this is going to be a broadway Spring 2020 thing. It is a phenomenal show, and I’m really excited to get to see it again!
The show is in no way ready for Broadway. I always preface my thoughts on this show by saying I don’t think you’ll find a bigger fan of Alanis than me. But JLP, as it was at A.R.T., is a mess. The book needs a complete overhaul. I’ve even suggested eliminating the character of the son entirely, since he serves no real purpose other than “I saw it!” Add to it the jumble of every single “issue” that’s thrown in for characters to deal with, and it just needs a new book writer to come in and clean house with it.
It's Emotional Porn... which the Tweens love (DEH, BMC)..... but Emotional Porn can only keep so many shows afloat a season.
It needs a toooootal re-write because, right now, it plays as something that was only created for people who like seeing how eMoTiOnAl they can get in a theatre.
Pretty sure its dead. The cast has moved on to other projects and shows. The creative team has also been doing other projects. I have a feeling this is the least of their worries

Honestly, I think the show was brilliant at ART. They could tighten up about 10 minutes off of the show, but it accomplishes a lot with relevant topics and has incredible arrangements of already great music. "You Oughta Know" is probably the most thrilling musical number I've seen on stage this year. This would be a hit, I think. I have a feeling they'll wait a season, with MOULIN ROUGE and HADESTOWN. If not, I'll just hope for a cast recording or EP of the new songs.

Casts AND creatives OFTEN move on and do other projects - doesn't mean they aren't willing to come back when asked. I'm sure they given some idea about future plans. As soon as one key player has other committments, it frees everyone up.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.
Sondheimite, your description as "emotional porn" is just a description of traditional melodrama, which has historically been the theatre's dominant popular form. Granted, the show DOES sound by all accounts like it can sometimes be "a bit much."
