Hello all.  I realize that there are several existing threads.  I did try to search, but I couldn't find the exact thread I was looking for.  Anyway, I hadn't seen Season 2 in quite a while.  I have both seasons on dvd.  There is something I wondered about.  When Kyle died in Season 2, Ivy Lynn attended the Hitlist Show dedicated in his honor.  I was surprised that there was no mention of an understudy for Ivy in "Bombshell".  Who might have been her Marilyn u/s?  Also, the Tony Awards segment (last episode) was rather poignant.  When it came to present the lead actress category in a musical, Marin Mazzie was the presenter.  She was ever so lovely.

"Noel [Coward] and I were in Paris once. Adjoining rooms, of course. One night, I felt mischievous, so I knocked on Noel's door, and he asked, 'Who is it?' I lowered my voice and said 'Hotel detective. Have you got a gentleman in your room?' He answered, 'Just a minute, I'll ask him.'" (Beatrice Lillie)

Re: Ivy Understudy

If we are trying to pretend like the show would have taken the time to actually think about such a detail instead of just making something up on the fly to make sure Ivy was in that scene..... whomever took over the same ensemble track Karen was originally in once she was promoted to the star role since that was the understudy track before Karen took over the role out of town.

Nawww she actually mentions something about how she'd be taking the night off from the show to someone. I forget the exact line or who she said it to but it's made very clear that Ivy is calling out of Bombshell last minute to go.

Not related to your question.... but...

I have never despised a character more then Elis in any TV show.

Oh my gosh when I was doing my own rewatching of the show, I wanted to smack him everytime he came on screen. The absolute worst. I hated him from the beginning when he recorded Ivy in that PRIVATE recording session.

We aren't meant, nor do we need, to see every aspect of the show's reality. Ivy does in fact mention that she is feeling a "tickle in [her] throat" (indicating to Derek how she is going to attend the performance). Later at the theater during the Bombshell performance, Christian Borle asks a stage manager "when did [she] call out?" So very clearly there is an understudy performing. But who her understudy is isn't important. It's not at all relevant to the story line.

THAT MEANS HE WAS A GREAT SOAP VILLAIN. They should not have cut the only villain from a soapy prime time show. Season 2 lacked conflict manly because Ellis was cut. I think they need to make a season 3 where Ellis is a "Ken Davenport" type of up-start-non-conventional producer who is competing with Eileen. Karen is now a successful TV actress whose show just got canceled and is being wooed back to Broadway. Ivy is a Tony award winning mother who like her own mother resents being a mother and is fighting tooth and nail to stay relevant. Eileen hires the old team to write them a musical about two women (a la Feud).

... and GO!

They keep making new seasons of shows... it's time to bring back smash and just accept the fact that it was a campy prime time soap about Broadway. Season 2 fails on so many levels because they try so hard to avoid the camp - only to become higher camp. Kyle's death - lol - now THAT'S camp!
