Studying musical theatre while doing other stuff...#1

Hey, so I'm supposed to be going to uni in two years and I really want to do a performing arts degree but my parents think that it won't get me a job... Is there anyway that I can study musical theatre while doing a "normal" maths or science degree? I live in the UK btw.

Also, if I continue doing dance and train myself at singing while participating in my university's musicals would I be at a good enough level to audition for actual paid parts or should I not even bother?

There are far too many factors going on for a blanket statement. LOTS of (US) performers don't have degrees in PA....taking classes privately is a great way to keep the field even.

Being successful as a performer is a risk no matter what - luck, talent AND training all come into play.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.
