I made the link clickable below. I do wonder why this is needed. I know the R&H stage version wasn’t enthusiastically reviewed or received, but ALW is setting himself up for comparisons. Then again I thought School of Rock sounded like a bad idea and it exceeded my expectations (and was a hit)  so we’ll see:

This is just as unnecessary as his Wizard of Oz revisal. RSC’s Oz is perfectly fine, as is R&H’s Cinderella. Why can’t he come up with something actually new?

If it’s not broke, don’t fix it.

I would call this trash, but it's interesting that he's working with one of the creators of EVERYBODY'S TAKING ABOUT JAMIE.

I would say it's different than his Wizard of Oz revisal in that he's not writing new songs to supplement an existing score. It sounds like they are creating an entirely new show. This is a story that people will continue to come back to when looking for a new project. Just look at how many versions have actually been created for the stage (musicals, plays, operas, ballets), and both the big and small screen (from straight forward adaptations to versions inspired by the tale and everything in between).

I’m a little interested to see how this is different from Rogers and Hammerstein’s version as well

Another new version of ?Cinderella’ could be interesting if it does something new and innovative with the material. I am somewhat sceptical about Lloyd Webber’s presence given his famously inconsistent record (?Starlight Express’ borrowed heavily from Cinderella and was a total trainwreck, although ’Evita’,’Joseph’ and even ?Cats’ have taken tropes from the ?Cinderella’ story and used them more effectively) but ?Cinderella’ is a very versatile tale, and there are plenty of ways to make a modern day retelling interesting...

I love the Cinderella story, so I'd welcome this, however, this sounds like Ever After, which is still aiming for a Broadway debut. Heck, I'd welcome both.

I love Cinderella too but I would welcome ALW's version over Ever After

According to the article, they are completely reworking - and presumably resetting the time and place of - the story.

The article stated that it wouldn't be a traditional fairy tale kingdom, but it wouldn't be something modern like Los Angeles 2023, so it literally could be set anywhere and any time.

Starlight Express WAS Cinderella. He should just look back at what he has already done.

Exactly. Beneath all the Rollerskate races and gaudy 80's excess, Starlight Express was basically a gender-flipped version of the classic fairytale - Rusty was Cinderella, Electra and Greaseball were the Ugly Sisters, the Starlight was the Fairy Godmother. It's still an incredibly stupid musical, but this simple child-friendly story-line played a key part in its success in the UK and Germany.

However, there is more than enough room for multiple interpretations of Cinderella...

Cinderella is my favorite story ever, but I only really like it when it's set in the past. You know, a "fairy tale" time. So I hope they don't set it in too modern a place. Also, the magic is my favorite part of the story, so I don't know what to think when they say it will be taken away from a "world of magic and fairy godmothers".

But I still have hope because he said, "Every piece of the story is followed". This could really turn out good, because I still love the basic story so much, and Andrew Lloy Webber's music is usually brilliantly gorgeous. Call me hopefully excited.

It's true that we have Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella, but that one was written for television, not the stage, so it's hardly a full show, and it doesn't have music like Andrew Lloyd Webber's.

Right. It has Rodgers and Hammerstein.

Here is a photo of a man who obviously has a firm enough grasp on today's youth culture to write a musical about them

Webber isn't trying to write for youth culture with this musical, he's trying to write for a new, creative, interesting take on a classic story.

ALW will have a long way to go to top Cinderella in INTO THE WOODS.

Hasn't he already done this??  It was called Starlight Express.

I try to be open-minded but this sounds TERRIBLE and unnecessary.

Honestly, this is a rehash of a rehash. ALW used to claim up and down in interviews that Starlight Express was his "modern Cinderella tale" and we see how that turned out. I find it amusing he would return to the same idea - and one that's been rehashed to death by everyone - to try for something better this time. I wish he'd try something different... maybe "Aspects of Love 2: Giulietta's Revenge"!

It sounds terribly unambitious but I'd sooner this than a certain other sequel which is arguably his worst decision ever.
