Please turn back and go away!

I'm trying to convince some stubborn relatives in NC's inner coastal plain counties to evacuate.  But, they've got farm animals and personal pride to contend with it seems.  They have homes and farms located near the confluence of two major rivers that dump into the Pamlico Sound.  Mandatory evacuations are in effect already in several of those counties with a couple neighboring counties issuing voluntary evacuation notices.  And then there's the tornadoes that almost always spin out on shore.  I'm having flashbacks to the damage done to Puerto Rico,  US Virgin Islands and the rest of the Greater Antilles by Hurricane Maria.

I hope they stay safe!

Whenever they show diagrams on TV of the storm’s projected path, all I see are phallic symbols.

Thanks for the well-wishes gang.  I have several family members who live in New Bern, NC which is bearing the brunt of the hurricane's wrath right now due to the storm surge.  There was a 10 ft surge reported last night that flooded most of the downtown area.  The soils down there were already saturated from recent rainfall and that particular low-lying city is at the confluence of the Neuse and Trent Rivers.  It was a geological recipe for disaster.  Those folks have only seen the opening act.  The storm is slow moving and high tide should have already moved in.  With wind and surge coming in from the east still, the rivers are literally backing up with no egress for the storm water runoff.  It will get worse before it gets better.

Friend of mine MOVED from Miami to N.C.  a year ago to get away from the hurricanes .

I asked her if she left a trail of breadcrumbs so the hurricane could find them!  ( no it was gummy bears)

So she still has a sense of humour about it. They bugged out ( they r in Charlotte too) to D.C. but hope to return Tues.

Hope your family holds up too Javey.

Thanks sabrelady.  Family members down east are ok.  Concern now has shifted to folks in and around Fayetteville and Charlotte, two sizable population hubs bracing for catastrophic flooding.

Stay safe yankeefan7!

I live in Wilmington and I think this is the first night in a week that I'll be able to sleep. I evacuated to the central part of the state, but I've worried nonstop about those that stayed and whether I was going to have a home to come back to. After the landfall I saw some photos of my neighborhood that showed only minimal damage and no flooding. But then the hours of torrential rain came and people were begging for water rescues on social media. The tornado warnings started next, one of which showed up on radar as going right down my road. I thought my luck had run out and assumed my first floor apartment would be flooded for sure. Then this morning, 150 miles inland, I woke up to a tornado warning not far from where I'm staying. I finally got the news from my apartment management this afternoon that somehow there was no flooding or severe damage on property. I still don't know when I will be able to return though because all the roads going into Wilmington are flooded.
