My family decided that they are going to be taking a trip to nyc during the thanksgiving weekend. What are some off broadway/broadway shows should I recommend to them. I’m seeing Ferryman in October so other then that they are not picky just sometime fun. Thanks

You need to give us more info...are you the only kid? If not, what ages? What else have they seen? No one wants to waste their time suggesting shows youve already seen.

Anything they've hated? LOVED?

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

I’m not a kid haha. In my mid 20s. My parents are in their mid 60s. That’s embarrassing.

I go to NYC a lot more then they do. On the shows that are playing I’ve seen wicked, come from away, Dear Evan Hansen, Kinky Boots, Mean Girls, Waitress, and The Bands Visit. I liked them yes some more then others but I didn’t hate any. Trying to stay away from “kid shows” I’m sure they are fun but I’m not sure they will like them

I think they prefer smaller shows but will always have a soft spot for big classics. They like musicals and plays equally. They just saw Passion at Signiture and they loved it.

If you can swing it, Cursed Child. Don't need to be a HP fan to enjoy it, and it's wonderful!

If you prefer a smaller show, definitely consider Once on This Island.  The space and staging at Circle in the Square is truly unique.  For big classics, see if you can find tickets to My Fair Lady.  And your parents might really enjoy the music of Beautiful.

Once on This Island might be perfect. Hope it’s still playing by Thanksgiving.

That's a legitimate fear.  I think if it makes it thru the next two weeks, it will be good until January.  But that might be a struggle.

If it's not and you think they might enjoy a very funny play, go see The Play That Goes Wrong. And don't be embarrassed by your parents' ages. I'm sure they're not embarrassed by yours.

thats a good suggestion too. Thanks you!! Oh the embarrassing was not in regards of their ages. I’m more embarrassed that I came off as a young person.

If they have a soft spot for classics I would recommend My Fair Lady.

In case I made it back to New York again before the end of the year (sadly, I won’t), I had been keeping a list of shows I’d like to see. They’ll mostly all close before I get back to NYC. See below (for shows that should be open when you’re there and you won’t have already seen ):

- [ ] Torch Song (P) - opens 11/1/18
- [ ] The Lifespan of a Fact (P) - closes 1/13/19
- [ ] The Waverly Gallery (P) - closes 1/27/19
- [ ] American Son (P)
- [ ] Network (P)

Not a week for discounted tickets, though, so if you see good regular priced tickets to a show you want, get them. Otherwise, you may get stuck waiting for premium seats to not sell to sit anywhere decent.

Oh I know. I usually go in the fall so I am able to use discounts for shows or go during previews it is what it is.

You’re welcome. They’re all plays. The only musical (Girl from the North Country) I had in my list is scheduled to close before Thanksgiving.

OP said, “Trying to stay away from “kid shows” I’m sure they are fun but I’m not sure they will like them

I think they prefer smaller shows but will always have a soft spot for big classics.”

So I’m not sure The Christmas Show at Radio City fits the bill here. I will say I took my parents to a touring production of it several years ago and we liked it!

I’m a little late to the party, but just found out that Girl from the North Country has now extended its off-Broadway run at The Public til December 9th (I think) so that could be a consideration now. It seems to fit your parent’s criteria: smaller show that doesn’t appeal to kids.
