I'm a huge Groundhog Day and Andy fan. I'm also among those who really enjoyed Pretty Woman, along with Andy's performance.
That being said, for all that he does more than you'd think with the character of Edward, I don't think the role itself is meaty enough for him to win the Tony. Still, I'd love to be proven wrong, and I'd love to see him at least nominated.
Of the announced shows we have Santino Fontana and Will Chase as possible contenders. If Beetlejuice comes in, add Alex Brightman to that list. Unfortunately they'll probably push Andy Karl aside.
Andy Karl should've won a Tony for ''On the 20th Century'' and/or ''Groundhog Day.'' What a shame neither of those shows ran LAST year, because he would've been a slam-dunk. Winning a Tony is about so much more than talent; there's timing and the competition, too. I hope Andy beats those odds someday soon.
If the role is as limited as it is in the movie, I would suspect Brightman would be featured along with Leslie Kritzer, with Rob McClure and Kerry Butler up for leading.
I thought he was woefully miscast in Groundhogs Day. There's a big difference between watching someone who looks like Bill Murray act like a complete detached jerk for a few hours than it is watching someone who looks like Andy Karl act like a complete detached jerk for a few hours. I spent the entire show wishing they hadn't cast the role so "pretty" and that they'd cast a more charismatic character actor as opposed to a leading man. I didn't think Karl did anything special with the role at all. I thought it was serviceable.
Judging from what I saw in Boston Aaron Tveit will also be a contender. Just off of pure feeling though I think Santino Fontana will bring it home this year
I think Andy Karl should've won in 2015 for ON THE 20TH CENTURY, mostly because I felt Christian Borle just repeated the same smarmy jack@$$ routine that he usually defaults to...

Maybe! You never know! Tony Shalhoub was nominated for a Tony three times before he finally won the Tony a few months ago. On that note, Andy Karl has been nominated for a Tony three times as well so who knows?!?

I agree. I think he's absurdly overrated. Why anyone found him anything other than painfully bland in Groundhog Day is beyond me. I think he's perfectly average and sometimes I think his looks may distract, if you know what I'm saying.
All awards are subjective, but for the record, Andy Karl won the Outer Critics and Drama Desk Awards for ''Groundhog Day,'' not to mention the Olivier Award in London, where he beat the heavily favored hometown boy Charlie Stemp (for ''Half a Sixpence'' ).
It's so early we can't rule out what else is going to come in. Especially with the incredibly likely transfers of "Hadestown" and "Girl From the North Country." The all of a sudden we throw into the mix Patrick Page (another long overdue vet) and Stephen Bogardus (taking over the role Ciaran Hinds was nominated for an Olivier for) respectively.
I love Karl and agree with those that found him fantastic in Groundhog Day and 20th Century. I also thought he was fantastic in Drood and Rocky (which I liked more than most). All of that said, if there isn’t a better leading male performance than his in Pretty Woman this year, then it truly will have been a terrible season. The show is a disaster, and he is bland at best. Much (probably most) of the fault lies in the material. I’d be thrilled to see him win a Tony. Just not for this.
