What do you think? I'd love to see Marin Mazzie take on Little Edie, but, given the financial flop of the original, they'd probably need a major name for any producers to take that risk.

It would need a major name to not flop, yes, but it would need a major TALENT to work.

Ebersole will not soon be forgotten, if ever.

Roundabout considered bringing in the Rachel York/Betty Buckley production for a limited run at the Pels, but they ultimately passed.

The show is only 12 years old. I'm sure it will be seen again in New York at some point, but how many people can really be itching for a major-scale Broadway revival already?

We've already had a Spring Awakening revival, and that was the same season.

(Edit: of course, Spring Awakening was big hit...)

That production also had a fundamentally different concept than the original. It also wasn't terribly successful -- perhaps because there wasn't a huge audience for such a recent Broadway show.

Let's wait ten years or so when Laura Benanti is age appropriate for the Big Edie/Little Edie role.

I know everyone wants her to do everything, but Meryl would be stupendous.

They would need a major name to even attempt it, and I can’t imagine anyone will ever be able to top the colossal, towering performance of Christine Ebersole’s.

Love for CSC to take a stab at this. Keep it very small.

That original production was incredible and, for me, will not be topped. I saw the lovely production in Sag Harbor, but I kept thinking how much I missed how it was done originally.

My god. It's been 12 years! I guess it wouldn't hurt to revive it.

I doubt it’d ever be back on Broadway unless a major star did it for a limited run. I’m sure it could return and be a hit off-Broadway, though.

that would be wonderful

i also recently thought of possibly Kristin Chen in the role, anyone think that maybe could work?

Kristin Chenoweth should do it in the next 6-7 years. I think the show could be revived many many years later without a big name to sell it given natural artistic interest in revamping/revisioning the show.

Couldn't be Cheno for a couple of reasons, not the least of which is physical. Neither Big or Little Edie was that short!

I think it will be revived in New York at some point.  It's too good a show to not warrant that but I think the right venue would matter.  It's almost a chamber musical so it wouldn't require a huge theater, but with the right creative team I think it's very revive-able.

I saw the original with Ebersole, and it was an incredible evening of theatre.  I hear so many people dog on the first act, as if it is boring.  I think it's a glorious pastiche musical with tuneful melodies and a strong plot.  The laughs really come in the second act, and I think the whole piece works wonderfully together.

I love the idea of Laura Benanti.

Victoria Clark would be GLORIOUS.

Chenoweth and Benanti sound totally wrong, in my opinion.

I would love to hear Clark sing “Will You?” And “Another Winter in a Summer Town”.

"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022) "Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009) "Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

I was more thinking Kelli as Big Edie/Little Edie and Victoria as act 2 Big Edie, but either way they both would sing the crap out of that beautiful music.

Kelli is a bit too sweet and reserved for the Little Edie role in act two. Cheno will have a hard time disappearing into the role. Her personality is too strong.

Why would Benanti be wrong for the part in 10+ years? She's too young now, but could handle the classical singing in act one and then transform into the more character singing in act two.
