I get counter-programming, but going directly against Star Wars doesn't seem like the smartest business move.

The Wicked movie isn't happening (at least, not in a year's time.) I am making a firm prediction that the release date will be pushed back, as there is absolutely no way a Wicked movie will be ready in over a year when there is still no confirmation on a director, a cast, etc.

And yeah, supersam, it is really interesting to note that Cats is going up against Episode IX, but... as we saw in the last holiday season, counter-programming may be the best bet for the film, considering the fact that Jumanji and The Greatest Showman ended up being the "huge holiday hits" of 2017!

Granted, I still don't think a Cats movie will actually sell tickets (no matter the reviews), but what do I know?

I don't think their goal is to be a $100m opening weekend blockbuster. They're likely hoping for a respectable opening and be a long-runner and awards-bait. This isn't exactly a Harry Potter/Avengers opening against Star Wars on the competition level.

Counter programming works. Look at Mamma Mia vs. The Dark Knight and The Devil Wears Prada v. Superman Returns. If marketed correctly, it shouldn't be a problem.

I don’t see this movie being a big hit anyway, so I doubt they’re worried about competing against Star Wars.

Going by Variety Wicked is delayed

Well I didn't want to get into it, but he's a Satanist. Every full moon he sacrifices 4 puppies to the Dark Lord and smears their blood on his paino. This should help you understand the score for Wicked a little bit more. Tazber's: Reply to Is Stephen Schwartz a Practicing Christian

I can assure you Universal isn't going into this saying "this won't be a big hit."

This isn't really counter programming though. Both films appeal to the same audience (families).
