Just because they aren't visibly on stage doesn't mean that actors aren't working very frequently- readings, workshops, labs, private concerts, development of projects that end up going nowhere, etc. Things that pay their bills but that the general public very rarely will see.

I love the actor word “project,” which is purposely so vague so can be anything from a Broadway show to a one-person play they are writing for themselves alone in their apartment. Anything to keep up appearances...
