Barbara Harris, the Tony-winning star of The Apple Tree and On a Clear Day You Can See Forever, has died of lung cancer at the age of 83.

Harris began her career in the Chicago improv world before gaining fame on the New York stage. However, she largely walked away from the theater in the early seventies, focusing the remainder of her career on films and television. She earned an Oscar nomination for Who is Harry Kellerman and Why is He Saying Those Terrible Things About Me?, and appeared in Robert Altman's classic Nashville and the original Freaky Friday.

Her final stage appearance was in a Chicago-area production of Prelude to a Kiss in 1991.

RIP.

"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

Her version of 'Hurry It's Lovely Up Here" is my favorite. RIP!

"Now, if we don't live peaceful, there's gonna be nothin' left in our graves except Clorox bottles and plastic fly swatters with red dots on 'em."

"Peggy, you know what a penis is. Stay away from it."
